Ted,

Sounds like you don't have the time for another project, maybe we should talk about taking that truck off your busy hands. Lol.

Nice find, yet again...

Happy holidays,

Well I finally got time to check out the M1038 some more. I have completely gone through the electrical system. Man, people sure do neglect these trucks. I replaced the front and rear marker lights, right rear tail light assembly, new bulbs all around, new bo light, new yellow labe control box and gpc, new ground harness, new flasher unit and next up is a new wiper motor. She started right up, no smoke, no hesitation and lots of vroom. Then on to the oils, lube and flush coolant system (needs temp sensor and heater valve) tomorrow! :)

Sorry, no picts!

Well I got the oils changed and am now letting the hubs drain down so I can repalce the half shafts, steering gear and any ball joints that have torn boots. The inspection plates on the hubs are corroded and I have replacements to install as well. :D

No pictures yet but soon.

I removed the steering linkage and it was the typical everything warn out parts on old hmmwv's! All new will be installed. The geared hub access plates are heavily corroded so off they went and new replacements are ready for install. Things to do next are the half shafts, hub input seals, clean and reassembly.

Enjoy a few pictures.

Jason, those are not the average little wimpy car jack stands. They safely hold my Unimog which weighs in over 14,000 pounds. While working on this M1038, it does not even wiggle while its up there and they are not fully extended. BTW, I decided to replace the half shafts with inventory, that is why I did not send in the cv boot part #'s. Thanks though.

New tie rod ends, new idler, new pitman, new hub covers and new front half shalfts installed. Tranny filter changed and new atf added. Brakes are like new. Next up is the rear half shafts and then fill all four hubs with oil. New MT radials on 12 bolts and she is back to a running truck. Once it gets above freezing, I need to flush coolant and replace hoses and heater valve. I did get a winch setup and am waiting for it to arrive, once installed, she will be a M1038 again! Fun fun fun.

Sorry for the crappy picture quality.

It is not cold inside Brad. Here are some of the trucks (Joels is the left one) fresh back from Atlanta and that is Georgia snow and ice on them!

No wrench turning last night since Christmas arrived late. More on that later!

George, that will be a separate thread

I did the rear half shafts last night. While the truck is up in the air, next up is parking brake replacement. Hopefully the winch get in next week so I can get that completed.

Sorry no picts.

Okay, after a week on the road plus two fun road trips, I finally turned some wrenches on my M1038. I got a nice used complete winch installed. I still have to add the d rings and terminate the electrical. For those of you that have not mounted a winch, some simple planning allows you to install it once, not several times!

Install lhs frame extension to lh frame rail and tighten the 3 bolts. Make sure everything is lined up.
Loosely install rhs frame extension on to winch plate.
Lift winch assembly and slide lhs of winch onto the lhs frame extension while positioning the rhs.
Install the 3 bolts (back on one gets the wire bracket installed). Tighten up.
Install the front winch plate bolts with d rings (I still have to do this), line everything up and tighten.
Install the winch control box on lhs hood support bracket.
Route wire per manual.

I can only hope this helps someone since it was quite the challenge, but yet still fun since the truck looks correct now. :)

Next up is the pinion parking brake, fresh tires on 12 bolts, new seat cushions, new soft top assembly and rad flush when the weather warms above freezing.

I see you have installed an early type winch bumper. Are you making this humvee as it would have come off of the assembly line? I don't know anyone that has done that yet. Dunsbr and I have been wondering when someone would do that.

Hi George,

You got it! :D This is such an original USMC M1038 that I decided to build it back to perhaps how it was when it was delivered: 4 man camo soft top, original style winch and plate, original brush guard, original style seats, and maybe even radio equipment. The only newer mods will be radial tires on 12 bolt rims (I do have a new set of bias and 8 bolts though for the truely diehard purist), and a new style wiper motor. Think this will catch on with collectors out there in 20 years!
