M101A3 wont work with Rhino Tire mount

Post by 86humv » Mon May 31, 2010 10:54 pm

I tried to put a M101A2, and A3 trailer behind the Hmmwv, but didn't work...The surge brake assy. hits the tire thats mounted on the Rhino carrier. Guess I'll have to put the pintle hook bumper extension on.
I know I saved it for some reason.

Same thing with the towbar...
But the extension and the tire mount won't fit without modifications on the bracket of the tire carrier...
I break it, I fix it!

Me fixed the problem.....Mees added a 3/8th inch thick shim under the pin lock mount, but had to elongate the 2 holes a full diameter and move the pin lock mount up.
I could not use the bumper extension....it picks up the same bolts the pin lock mount uses.

Confused I am. I've been towing my 101A2 behind the hummer with a rhino lift and have had zero problems. I can see how the standard pintle tucked between the frame rails might be a problem, but with the rear bumper it is spaced back far enough.

Perhaps this bumper extension is too small? Put the airlift bumper on, no problem.

I realized why I don't have problems with the rhino and my pintle on the Hummer. I use the receiver hitch with a pintle setup. It is lower down and further out than a bumper mounted pintle.

Just finished two tows totaling 3300 miles with my M101A3 on the Hummer. Zero issues once I replaced the surge brake shock absorber. These trailers are a dream to tow behind a hummer.

Fully loaded with Oak wood and it's like it is not even there. Can't wait to get a M1101 and see how that does

I'll get some photo's This Fri.
I took the two bolt mount bracket the pin goes thru and slotted the holes and moved the bracket up 3/8" and put a 3/8" shim
under bracket after moving it up.
The M1101 / 1102 trailers clear just fine without the Mod.

The first and second photo of modified mount bracket, and New tire with air.
I can just fit the trailer into the pintle without lifting the tire. This is with a 3/8th" shim under bracket, and 2ea. holes slotted.

Third photo is another truck without the mod , tire is half worn, and tire has no air....I cannot install trailer unless I crank up tire mount, then when put back down, its pretty close and would probably touch if the tire was new and aired up.

Greg, Have you tried operating the Rhino Lift with an M101 series trailer attached to the pintle? If so, how did it go?
