4l80e diagnostic plug apapter

Post by dunsbr » Fri Jun 05, 2009 9:29 pm

Hi Guys,

I've been doing some reading up on the Tech 1 and the HMMWV Trans controller and have designed a simple plug in adapter to go into the small diagnostic connector (J1) on the big green TCM Box.

You need a cannon plug to suit the J1 Connector and a 12 pin ALDL connector from an old GM car. connect the wires as shown and you should be able to read the trans data from the HMMWV TCM using a Tech 1 scanner or any aftermarket scanner that works with OBD 1 or OBD 2.

I can draw up the same diagram for a 16 pin OBD 2 connector if its of interest to those who may have a Tech 2

**** NOTE****
After some more reading, I have found that the military add a cigarette lighter socket to the jumper cable to run the Tech1, Tech2 or Modus.
So I have now edited the image to show how to wire it in too.

Cheers

Very interesting doctor. Good diagnosis of the patient. Now pull out the thermometer....:)

That tech you have should see things like how long it takes to shift from first to second.
Throttle angle.
Historic codes.

You should be able to control amps going to the PCS solenoid. No amperage means max line pressure. Max amps means lowest line pressure. The pcs solenoid sends a hydraulic pilot signal.

TCC solenoid is Pulse width.
PCS solenoid is variable width. ie varying amperage not the volts.
1-2 and 2-3 block create hydraulic pressure as needed. Valves move and shifting is made.

Accumulators in the transmission "cushion the blow" for shifting. Shifting too hard? it could be an accumulator seal.

4th clutch is fed by the 2-3 shifting valve. 1-2 and 2-3 must engage for 4th.
Mechanical lockup in the torque converter is created by the TCC solenoid. This can happen in 3rd and always happens in 4th. Can stay that way when you down shift.

That is your lesson of the day.

I made up my adapter harness today and connected the Tech 1A.
It works a treat.

You can interrogate a whole range of functions in the transmission quite simply.

Its a handy tool to have if you have a 4L80e transmission in the truck.

Thanks for you Help Brad but I can't find a matching plug that fits on the TCM.
The flange connector on the TCM is this one: SCPBS03AFF-18-12S

Here is the manufacture spec.

Good find Tim!

I'm working on getting the 6 Pin Milspec connectors now.

I'll keep y'all posted on how I go.

Hi Guys,

I have a quote from the Australian arm of a UK based company (http://www.cambridge-technologies.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) for the J1 connector plug.
A suitable connector is Part Number CA3106E18-12PB Connector - Straight Plug, Solder Contacts

Alex, they have the connector in stock in the UK, but from the look of the drawing (attached), it would seem that ITT is a German company so you might be best searching locally.

Cheers
