Generator Vibration

Post by Retired War Horses » Thu Oct 16, 2008 4:40 pm

I have an issue that has been driving me crazy for Months
At low Idle my Generator has a rattle that goes away if I come up to about 725 rpm, if I set the idle at 625rpm it is terrible. It gets worse when I put it in Gear and the rpm drops a bit. I have the newer style Gen support bracket installed. Thinking it was the Generator I swapped it out...No difference, I checked for a broken Gen Mount but looks fine...

I can loosen the rear Gen support and it goes away so I know it's got something to do with that upgraded support bracket....anyone else got that same newer rear support installed? My other HMMWV has the older version with no issues.

Kinda funny but my 1st HMMWV I owned had the same sound, it was a broken rear gen support bracket, you just could not see it till it was removed and broke in two. It was the older version bracket that had broken, probably why they came out with the upgraded version I am now using is the truck that now appears to have same Sound.

I don't have the older type Gen Support to replace it with...does anyone else? I figured i'd give it a try.

One more thing...has anyone else who has the newer Gen support bracket had as much of B**** of a time as I did getting it to line up to be installed?

I used to have a rattle and found that the problem was with the generator itself. I could not find the problem for several weeks and then decided to swap out the generator with another one that I had. The one that I put in has the large voltage regulator that sits on top of the generator body. That seemed to cure the problem and the rattle has never come back. I never really looked further at the old generator to determine why it rattled.

Hi Guys,

George Stojkos has had exactly the same issue on his truck.
I suggested that hecheck his engine mounts and the loosen his exhaust system and give it a shake to realign it to see if that helps.

In the process of checking all that, he has now found that his RHS engine mount has no bolts in it....

As I said in another post, A Humvee is like a box of chocolates..... :D

Yes, exactly the same issue with mine. If you had the 200 amp alt. steel bracket fitted do you need that extra rear support bracket at all ?

I don't read the whole post but do you have the support arm installed that gows from the lower mounting screw on the rear side of the genereator to the exhaust manifold?
I break it, I fix it!
