humvee steering PROBLEM: SLUGGISH IN RETURN

Post by mil-plus » Tue Feb 12, 2008 3:46 am

Guys
it's a long time I have a problem on my humvee m998 A1.
The steering wheel is not hard to turn however when you drive, you curve and you hand off the steering wheel, the wheels doesn't return straight.

It's something to me related to the steering gear .
I changed the goldie valve that regulate the fan flow . It seems to me from that event on I started having the steering stuck.

It's appreciated any suggestion in case you experienced with the same issue and you solved it.
please give me an hand even if you found on some manual this defect described.
thanks
viktor

I'd check the simple stuff first. All steering components lubed properly, to include balljoints? Toe-in good? Properly inflated?

If that's a no go, put your old fan valve back on and see if your sluggish steering disappears.

BTW did you bleed your steering system? Hold down the brake and steer from lock to lock several times.

Sounds like you got air in the system when you changed the fan solenoid
( the goldie valve) Bleed the power steering system and you should be fine.

Air in System, Been there....I also had a Bad Steering gear once that did the same.
Follow the Bleed Procedure in the TM.
