Upper A arm cracks

Post by Ozhumvee » Sun Dec 16, 2007 9:21 pm

I'm in the middle of doing a few jobs on the Humvee, one of which is to fit/weld the reinforcing rings to the upper A arms where the balljoint mounts.
The first one I've pulled off has a crack running between the two centremost balljoint mounting holes towards the thicker part of the A arm. It is about 1 1/4" long and goes right through the two thicknesses of metal at this point.
Might be something worth checking next time anyone pulls a top balljoint off.
I had this A arm off earlier in the year to replace the bushes on the chassi end and didn't notice any cracks then. The truck has done some pretty serious cross desert trips since though.

Uncle Brad's Used A Arm Co. at your service.

What do you need Peter, front or rear.?
(I'm guessing its a RH rear)

Since I discovered there is a difference in the front and rear A-Arms, I found that I have more rears than fronts in my shed of wonders.

I just saw your post on the HML and I was correct, RHR.
That seems to be the heaviest loaded coner of the truck at GWV.

The crack should weld up ok and the reinforcement will help things a lot.

But, I think its time you upgraded to 12k gear on the rear of your truck Peter. :?
The poor old girl might be a tad overloaded for an original spec Humvee on those desert trips.

Anyway, let me know if you want one of my spare A Arms.

upper a arm cracks

Hey Peter, Since you will be probably taking all the ball joints off to inspect for A arm cracks, why don't you try that Two Inch suppension lift that Brad has? Who better to test it than you?

George, I'll be taking all the ball joints off to fit the reinforcing rings anyway. I wasn't aware Brad had a suspension lift kit ;-))
I've welded the crack up and welded the reinforcing ring on so it is all fixed.
I also went and bought the larger size bolts for the balljoints (3/8 top and 7/16 bottom and have drilled the arms to suit so it should all be much stronger now. We must remember my Humvee is now approaching its 20th birthday next year.
The repair to the crack in the bottom A arm I did earlier in the year is fine despite a very hard desert trip at more than GVM ;-))
Now I just have to reassemble the hub with the additional/changed parts for the CTIS, change the top spring mount and fit the wagon rear springs and ONE corner will be finished.

How much do you think the Humvee weighs peter?

You probably really do need the LR to drive that thing lol

Id have to agree with Brad, your probably carrying alot more weight than most of us, except maybe the Army :D :D

12k rear end might not be a bad idea, i was wondering why you wanted to make it heavier with the ucp, btw he hasnt paid me yet so he hasnt got the parts... lol

It weighs in 'touring' trim with the Shippshape tent on top, full of fuel and water (270 litres diesel, 100 litres water), food, camping gear, spares & tools, second spare tyre, etc etc but with only me in it, no passenger or clothes for either of us 3,980 kgs, which is 8,774.25 lbs. Nowhere near 12k ;-)))
Got an MR so it can weigh 20 tonne before I need to upgrade.
The weight of the UCP was a deciding issue ;-))

Now, I'm sure we've been through this before...
As I recall, you guys post a pic of a Tasmanian devil, then I get into a discussion with Joel (That's before he went gay and had to sell his truck) about maps of Tassie and then I end up posting this pic:

to explain where Tassie is.... :D
