questions on new humvee

Post by imatwhitsend » Sat May 20, 2017 9:04 pm

Hi
I'm new here and I just got a 1991 M889. I had a 1961 M37 but I lost it in a fire. Anyway I have a few questions. Is it normal that I don't fell the trans shifting when I accelerate. Without a tach not sure of the engine RPMs are doing. Also my dash back lights are one clear and one green. Do you know of a good source for another clear one. I would like to change to red LEDs. And last what would be the best manual to get and where. The one I had for the M37 covered both operation and maintenance.

Thanks for the help.
Ken

The shift from 1st to 2nd is so quick you hardly ever feel it and to 3rd is only slightly noticeable (sometimes). It has already shifted to 3rd within a few feet of accelerating. I am sure all is OK with your truck.

All of the HMMWV manuals are available online from your -12 operators manual up thru the maintenance and depot level manuals. Download the set and keep them available. There are wiring diagrams and troubleshooting charts in them that will help newcomers keep their trucks going.

The HMMWVs came with green lenses in the instrument cluster but both red, blue, and clear are available. Most dealers in M series trucks can supply them to you. I run clear lenses in mine with LED bulbs because they don't get hot and melt the lenses.

The whimpy a$$ 6.2L engines in these things will never give you neck snapping shifts. Most of the time about the only way to tell what gear your in is to downshift and see if the sound of the engine changes.

BTW, you have a 998, not an 889.

Hi
Thanks for the help. And sorry about calling it an M889.
