Help with Huey Assembly at Oakland Museum in March

Postby John Neuenburg » Fri Mar 02, 2012 7:04 am

This is a request by Wayne Terry of the EMU-309 Huey helicopter project for some help March 12 & 13 at the Oakland Museum. Ideally Vietnam vets, but anybody really. The museum will be featuring an exhibit called "The 1968 Project." The exhibit is currently at a museum in Minnesota and will come out here via truck. It is visual reminders of items from 1968 and includes a Huey helicopter with rotor minus tail section, trans, and engine. Wayne and guys are in charge of assembling the helo and possibly the Apollo Command Module mockup. They need some help either or both days. Wayne's letter to the team is below. Contact him ASAP via his info at the bottom.

We’re looking for a few Vietnam Veterans from Oakland (especially Huey guys) to join me, Jerry, and 3 or 4 other volunteers from Minnesota to help assemble the Huey when it gets there. Or anybody, really. It takes about 4-5 hours or so to assemble in the museum. We’ve been practicing the assembly and have figured out most the kinks.

Here is my Plan A (disclaimer-rarely does Plan A actually get used and all dates subject to change slightly):

· We get some conversation going with you and anybody that you would recommend that may be interested in joining the effort to install a Huey in a museum.

· We all would meet the trucks at the Oakland Museum on Monday morning, March 12th at 9:00am. There is a logistics company hired to actually be in charge of the move from Minnesota and install the exhibit in Oakland. The Oakland staff are also on hand for the installation. My (our) part is to install the Huey but we should also help pushing 3 truckloads of wheeled carts from the curb into the museum.

· There is a really good photo op for the local press when we unload the blades out of the truck and hand carry them up the steps of the museum. The press may also want some interviews with you Veterans. Jerry and the guys here know that drill but the local connection with you and others is great!

· Tuesday morning we gather at the museum to assemble the Huey. I would think that the press cameras would be around for the assembly and more interviews. We can somewhat predict the timeline for assembly to help with press release types of stuff.

· Tuesday afternoon we stand back and tell stories and if a few guys are still available we head over and assemble our Apollo Command Module mockup (not a big project compared to the Huey).

There is still some logistics to work through with having volunteers working in the museums but our volunteer manager at MHS and Oakland’s volunteer coordinator will be coming up with a plan. They need to come to some resolution about things like applications, background checks, liability, insurance, etc.

Wayne or John,

Can you post the address for the museum and what time you'd like to get started?

Thanks,

Kurt
