25" Chrysler Aluminum Head

Post by Dozerman51 » Mon Mar 19, 2018 5:19 pm

Here are some photos of a used OEM Chrysler Aluminum Head that I recently pick up. They say they are rare so I bought it. Looks like all the threaded holes are good and it has a tag that reads "37-41 Chrysler Alum. Good Used". Hope the tag is telling the truth. I will have it checked out at the machine shop, and if good, will install it on the IND-7 in the WC-12. Will not look as good as the '41 Spitfire head that's in it now, but should be a good conversation piece at the vehicle shows.

Depends on which block it fits I suppose.
Polished up would be really spiffy, might add one or two HP too.
Neat find.

The 37-38 Chrysler 6 had the 228 and I believe the 39-41 Chrysler 6 had the 241. Both are 3 & 3/8” bore motors. By putting this head on my IND-7 with a 3 & 7/16” bore I will increase the compression ratio some.

I agree with W. Winget
Before doing something on the head, check and make sure your block and head is not a 23 inch or a 25 inch
As they were built in 2 different size.
As I got a engine IND-7 in 23 inch.
I do have about 6 engine in 25 inch block and few in 23 inch block.

Thanks guys for the advice, but I have checked the head and it is a 25 & 1/4” Head. Took it to my machine shop guy. He’s going to check it for warpage and if good will clean it up and chase all the threads.

Everyone take a good look at the clear DPCD mark on top of the head.

And the "P" means it could be for the longer Plymouth motor....which my friend has one stuck in his WC-56 where they cut into the regulator housing cover to gain clearance...not a good thing.
But he already measured it so it's a moot point.

Hi W. Winget
The only Plymouth that used the 25” block was the Canadian built Plymouth along with the Dodge. All Canadian built mopars used the 25” block. I don’t know about the 3/4 ton Dodge WC military, but installing a 25” block in the 1/2 ton WC military
is quite simple if you know what you are doing. Absolutely no cutting or welding on the Frame, Radiator Support or Firewall is needed. I wrote up a piece on this some time ago in this thread. Don’t forget that the Canadian built T-212(The Canadian model of the 1/2 Ton WC with right hand drive, different pick up box, and wheel hubs used the 25” motor. DPCD. Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler & Desoto. :D

I can vouch for this- had a 251 Spitfire in a WC-25 CC, and it fit without issue. Fan was a bit close to the radiator, but it was beautiful.

I like the IND-7(236), but I am on the lookout for a 265. Like they say, “There is no replacement for displacement”. :D Did you install the lower radiator air deflector or leVe it Off. Yes you are correct about the fan being close to the Radiator. There is still enough room to change the fan belt, but if I have to change the water pump, that might get dicey. I did line up the upper radiator inlet tube with the thermostat housing tube so it looks like a normal set up. I’m glad I did the conversion since to me, a 25” block just seems to round out the engine compartment better. I still have the good running 230 motor so who knows, one of these days if I get tired of seeing the Spitfire headed 25” in there I can always put back the 230. :o I don’t think so.
