Dodge T214 Engine Oil System

Post by 17thAirborne » Tue Jan 23, 2018 6:39 am

I am finishing the engine assembly on a Dodge T214 230cid engine that is an ordnance replacement engine in a Dodge WC12 1/2 ton. I am having difficulty trying to sort out the oil lines, tubes and fittings. The parts TM and diagram are not much help.

Can someone please post a few images AND details of the fittings that connect the engine to the oil filter (both ways) and the oil gauge. I have a pic of the left side of my engine and cannot figure out which of the oil holes are plugged, and which ones are for

A. Engine to oil filter
B. Oil filter to engine Boss 5
C. Engine to Oil gauge.

I have the three rubber hoses sold by VPW. I understand one goes to an elbow on the side, one to an elbow at the bottom and the other is part of the oil gauge line.

I just need to know more about fittings, connections and which of the 6 threaded bosses to use. A few pictures would be of great help, as would be lengths of the metal tubes between the various hoses.

Thanks in advance. :)

For the record, 3 is for the dip stick. Some times I can be such a dip stick :?

I did speak with Steve at VPW about these. he stated that any of the horizontally drilled bosses, (1,2,4 or 6) can be used for pressure to the oil filter or to the oil gauge. Boss 4 is for the oil filter to engine return.

This leaves me with determining which is the CORRECT fitting for the line to filter and the line to gauge.

A. Engine to oil filter
B. Oil filter to engine Boss 5
C. Engine to Oil gauge.

I guess I am slowly figuring this out. From the TM for the T214 engine, the following images leads me to believe (if the 1/2 ton oil placement is the same) that the following functions correspond to my image:

A. Engine to oil filter Boss 1
B. Oil filter to engine Boss 5
C. Engine to Oil gauge. Boss 4
Plugged Bosses: Boss 2,6

I was thinking Oil to Oil Gauge was from Boss 4 (Edit: was 3 which is dipstick) as shown in your first photo. I'll check mine when I get home if you have no answer by then.

Thanks much. I was looking at your engine pics, but could not make them out. Close ups of the fittings would help immensely, then Ill post the part numbers that I find locally. You are always a big help :)

Okay, the first two photos are of my WC52. The fittings are a little greasy. The second set of photos are from the Dodge WC16 which is the half-ton configuration in. It's a little tight in there with the radio suppression stuff:

Also, I notice that what you have marked as Boss 2 is actually the block coolant drain that has petcock valve. You can just see them on my photos to the right of the oil line in Boss 1.

Its interesting looking at your block that there were a early and late style of T214 engine block. I had a look at my 2 and the difference I spotted was the oil fill tube boss as the early one was a push in tube and the later block has the bolt on fill tube as you have.

i have to dig through my greasy engine parts bag, but all i recall is the slide in filler tube. i was also puzzled by the two threaded holes. thanks for noticing that :)

post script: the filler pipe is the slide in type. looks like i have another part to eventually replace.

download/file.php?id=121166 Book manual
download/file.php?id=121164 Your engine.

Hi OZ
It's Peter from Australia.

I went through my dozens of dodge engines to have a look at the oil line. All my engine oil line shows all the same as on your book manual you post pictures on top.
Don't forget it will not show on the book manual that their is a 7 plug located behind end of the generator bracket like plug 6 so don't use it And don't use plug 6 there's no way you will fit the oil gauge line as the starter is Blocking it. Your Pictures on top

These engine on engine stand all same oil line. My engine collection
T215
T214
T245
T173
T212

Engine on the restored, unrestored and projects WC dodge
1942 wc51 T215 shows same.
1944 WC51 T214 show same.
1945 WC51 Fire dodge show different oil gauge line coming behind starter.

Hope this helps

Cheers Peter
