Pictures of bed supports under the wood

Post by thunder37 » Thu Nov 09, 2017 9:45 am

Guys,

Anybody have a few good pics of the metal cross-members that are supposed to be above the frame rails and below the wood? I have two trucks, both stripped completely behind the cabs, and loose "tool boxes", but I only have a couple of unidentified metal items of the stuff in between. So if I could see what the metal stuff is supposed to look like installed right under the wood, it should help.

I attached two pictures of the kind of detail I am looking for, but these pictures don't have enough detail for me to solve the puzzle.

These are NOT pictures of my trucks, by the way, these I found on the internet while looking for answers.

Thanks!

Brent

These pictures are very helpful! Thanks!

I will holler if more would be good.

It will a week or two before I really get back into it. Just doing some planning and research now.

Thanks!

If you go to my photobucket WC-51 album, I believe I have the pics you need: But you'll have to go through them yourself- because I can't afford to pay for their premium service, I can no longer link directly to then...

Scott

PS- I just took a look through, and did not see the pics I thought I had there... However, in one of your pics, you can see how the heavy crosspieces are: Doubled assembly goes at the rear, and the two singles go at the front, open sides facing each other, about a foot apart; The frontmost one gets short bed bolts(as does the lightweight support member), and the doubled assembly gets the longest bed bolts, which go all the way through the frame, top & bottom . As to the light weight ones, the longer one goes forward of the chassis bump, and the shorter one goes across the fuel tank. The longer one bolts to the frame using the bed to frame bolts; the shorter one simply rests on pads on top of the frame. (All the crossmembers have pads between them and the frame: John at MWM has them) The rearmost bolts pass through a rectangular pad with a slot and a hole- The slot goes around a rivet and the bolt hole: the hole goes around the other rivet. The short lightweight crossmember has a round pad which snaps into the hole in the pylon on each side, and the long lightweight one has a pad with a hole. (The short bed bolts get their nuts under the upper frame flange)

Hope this helped...

Scott

Scott. Very helpful description! I have to sort through parts, find where they sit and determine any missing members. This will be easier using your description for sure!
Many thanks!

Hi Brent- "715m29's" lower photo shows the supports in about the right positions- Just have to look past the bed planks: You can see the rear (short)lightweight support in between the remaining bedboards, and the long lightweight one sticking out just behind the heavy mount... Those are the only supports- there is none in the middle, just a row of bolts with thick washers under the bedboards. I have no idea why they did it that way- they just did. If you have the two heavy singles, the heavy double, and a long & short set of lightweight(hat channel) supports, you have the whole set... With the bed strips on top (pressed metal longitudinal strips with carriage bolt holes) you should have two with a right angle for where the bedboards meet the toolboxes/sides, and the rest are straight- I think there are 5 or 6 of those. The real sorting is when you have to figure out which bolt goes where- but nowhere near as bad as the bolts for a wooden Ben Hur trailer!

Good luck with it!
Scott

Its all good, even the wc63 sketch could be useful!
I think I'm in good shape for now, I will sort and place parts where they seem to go. I can do a trial run with the boxes and see what's missing.
Thanks to all!!!!

Scott,

I have just gotten a WC51. Got it with nothing from seat riser back, but front is really good. No rust on this truck at all. I got it to run just other day, but she shut down. Carb is dirty I am sure. I will rebuild it this weekend I hope. I hold high hopes for this truck as a very good restoration candidate, as I will likely be able to drive it around the farm in a few weeks...This is the target truck. Picture below.

I have a second WC51, good project truck, also missing everything from the seats back, but I got a pile of parts too with it. Its a pretty good restoration candidate, but has had the entire rear frame surgically replaced with another (a very well done job, I must say), and its not close to running at all. Problem is the parts are mixed from other military trucks and jeep parts came with that deal, and I have to figure out IF I have the bed parts in the pile, and if so, what do I have and what is missing.

I have one other dilapidated WC51 that sat outside for 50 years and as I recall is quite bad, but from memory is complete but the bed is really stacked high full of junk and layered with tarps. It will be a significant job to get to it. I will have a look over thanksgiving as it may have useful bed parts though thoroughly rusted, might show me what I need.

So very soon I should have a detailed list of what I have and what I need. Can't wait to get started!

Brent

Guys,

For the first time, I got real lucky! I took all the crap out of my WC51 No. 1, as it has been a long, long time since I have seen the inside of the bed because it was loaded down with parts, transmissions, axles, tires, etc. etc. and covered with a tarp or two. It is totally complete, minus the wood which has all rotted off. So I have every support, wood strips, chassis pads, every thing I need to rebuild the bed on No. 3 perfectly, except the wood!

I will take a lot of pictures so that the info will be available for anyone in the future.

It was definitely worth the effort to clean this truck up as it has a lot of stuff I will use on WC51 No. 3.

Thanks guys!
