Dodge cylinder head question

Post by commander bond » Sat Aug 19, 2017 11:47 am

I have just picked up a cylinder head of a Dodge 1950's pick up truck/car I was told
it is the same length as my WC57 head my question is
1, will it fit
2, any problems to look out for
3, are they a higher compression than my WC57
4, is it worth the trouble
thanks Chris

If it is from a 230 and not a 251 it will fit on a WW2 230 block. There is also a head with the hump in the end for a water port; I don't know what those are for.

Hi
You need to measure your dodge head cylinder on your WC57 and then measure your spare dodge head cylinder you just got if they are the same size then your good to use it, if it's about 1 or 2 inch longer or shorter then it won't fit come out of a 1949 to 1974 car or truck as I know the later truck had 2 inch longer.

Cheers peter

The 230 WW2 head, and post war heads, are 23 inches long. The 251 heads (and 237) used in DeSoto and Chrysler, and late WM300 Power Wagons, are 25 inches long.
Easy to tell the diff.
1974? Tell me what flathead engine was used in 1974? The latest one I know was the 251 used in the WM300 until 1968; I have one.

I have measured the cylinder head and it is the same as on my WC57 so I assume
it will drop straight on did any later engines have a high comp head on ?

The "humped heads" are for blocks ( early I think) with the corresponding raised hump. Later "non humped heads" will not work on these blocks.

I don't know of any higher compression 230 heads. The last vehicle use that I know of is the 1960 WM300 Power Wagon (from 61 to 68 they used the 251 flathead) and for military use, the 1963 M37B1 (got that one too). And the M601 Power Wagon built in the 60s for export only. But those were 251s. After that the slant 6 took over.

The last couple years of flathead 230 cid passenger car engines had higher compression heads, 8-1 IIRC, these also had two barrel carbs. Not sure of the casting number, though.
