Thank you. It was a quick yet rewarding task. I'm looking forward to getting the steering done.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
Started the tear down of the steering box. I do not have a Gemmer installed, rather a Saginaw Gear type. Will need to do some research on parts if needed. For now It looks like common stuff and I'll probably replace the bearings and cups.
Wear between the end of the sector shaft at the adj nut end between the shaft and the bushing is right at 0.0025:, so I am happy to leave that alone. I have to check the other two bushings at the Pittman arm end.
Good enough for today.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
Research shows this to be from a G506 and 508. Would obviously work as it was in there, but I will probably swap it out. NOS is $350

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
Are all the u joints in your truck like that?
The u joints you have are for early WC1s or early 3/4 tons
They are actually a better joint and a hellova lot cheaper

Thanks Ernie, I thought I saw those somewhere for $24. I was pleased that it was not the other type.Ernie Baals wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2017 3:42 pmAll the dealers have them Midwest, Vintage etc

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
I decided to remove the old U joints, even though they were serviceable. I spent over an hour cleaning each end with them in. By removing them the clean up is really fast. Well ya live and learn. Now I can make a more informed decision on replacing or re-using. These are the Detroit type and the bearing retainer caps are 1.250" in diameter and the end to end dimension is 3.000" The shafts are the 16 spline type and the ends are machined to accept 1.250" bearing caps. These are referred to as Small Detroit. The TM shows the Mechanics type installed and as Ernie commented above, but the detroit's are stronger and cheaper to replace. ($24 vs $69 at VPW )

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
It does, but i left out the 1357 hours of my labor at $1.25/ hr The first post has a comprehensive list of all parts costs. I still have engine rebuild costs, sheet metal work on the cab, glass and weather stripping, wiring, wood bed and some misc items. I estimate another $4500 before I am done.twinflyer17 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 21, 2017 4:19 amThat includes the truck itself?17thAirborne wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2017 1:53 pmDirect Cost updated today after a big order and we are at $8135

This is my first complete restoration and i was way off on what i thought the parts cost would be. I plan on continuing to restore more MVs from the frame up in this detailed manner. The sale of this when done will fund the next projects.
