Sold WC-12 W-231808

Post by 17thAirborne » Wed Sep 07, 2016 7:43 am

UPDATE: sold There are too many things going on in my life right now, too little space for storage and too many projects competing for attention. I have another 14 months to complete residential construction, put two through college and start a normal life again. then I can start restoring again. Long story I know, but life is still a blessing. Located in TN, $17500 pm me and I'll provide a phone number for questions. Read this thread and you will know everything about the vehicle and the detailed work I've done. All wc parts shown on the pages and listed below that are on hand go with it.

I brought this WC12 home yesterday. It will stay on the trailer until I can take it to DMV for the SN/VIN verification and title work. Thereafter, I will begin a slow and detailed process of my first real restoration. My progress will not be quick, but I hope to post a detailed discussion of the work along the way and of course solicit recommendations.

I used 320 grit sand paper and lightly sanded the hood to reveal the USA number. It looks like the vehicle was originally painted, then the blue drab US number added, followed by another light coat of OD at some time and smaller USA numbers. I make out

. U.S.A
W-231808

which is close to what I calculated off of the Serial number stamped on the frame 86823XX. Here are some images, and also you will notice a blue drab stencil on the left and right forward frame under the wheel well. I cannot tell what it is, perhaps Tire Pressure (TP). The NM desert sun has faded things so much that the lightest of friction removes most of the pigment. To reveal what's seen in the images, I used 320grit, with extremely light pressure and perhaps 3 circles to get to where you see in the images. For now I will go no further.

Dated 15 Oct 16, Updated 1 Jun 19

I decided to follow wc56daveyboy lead and post my costs for this project. I will add everything except tools used to work on the WC12 and shipping costs.

If I stay focused on replacing or refurbishing existing parts and sticking to NOS or OEM, this should be a very true restoration. The area of greatest concern right now is the inability to find all NOS/OEM hardware to bolt everything back together. Not doing so will drop the quality down a notch, but the time and cost to get that aspect 100% correct for me is unrealistic. If the donor truck had not had so many replacement pieces (hardware) I would have been more diligent about reclaiming it all, but the total mix of stuff was amazing. I will acquire a small stash of DPCD hardware to place in the most visible locations, and call it good. If over time I run across more stuff, I can change a few things out.

Here is the partial list for now (Red is on hand)

According to David Doyles book it is in the last batch of 1000 trucks about 400 from the end. Its date should be September or October of 41

Wow, awesome looking WC-12! I'd love my next project to be one of these. Unfortunately, though, it's hard to find one in this good condition in the Mid-Atlantic thanks to snow and salt

Good luck on your resto! Looking forward to following your progress.

NM DMV is changing their computer program for Assurety Bonds for the title. so I will have to leave it on the trailer for a few weeks. In the mean while, here is the "W" number

Here is a period vehicle image showing the size and location of the "W" number and its size. I see the type of stencil used are all of the closed type letters. It seems to match location, type and size of the stencil I uncovered above. I am thinking this is the original registration number from 1941.

I figured out what is stenciled on the left and right front frame member behind the tire"

INF TO
. 40

It means inflate to 40 psi as per the TM. It is done in what looks like the standard Army 1" stencil and it is clearly Blue Drab. This will be a nice detail to add back on later.

Does anyone know if this is Dodge factory marked or US Army at the motor pool.

Disregarding the minor mods that's a nice looking WC. Best of luck on your restoration. 8)

Carburetor. Trying to ID the exact model, (Carter BB1 D6A2) then find replacement parts due to the massive glob of JB weld

What carb should be on this engine which is a T214 230cid engine.
It should be the T215 engine.

T'is I. Good to hear from you again. Its been many evolutions since the CA-1. Have had too many things in my life to focus on MVs until just lately. Both of my young men are now in college, and my time portal has opened up a bit.

Both CA-1s found new homes, one to NZ and the other to SD. Both in good hands with restorers. Lately I have been having the urge to go OD again, so I found this in the New Mexico weeds for a fair price. I recall you had redone a nice CA-1 and are now working on a WC-12, a thread I have been following.

u r correct! I am nearly done with my Wc12... Its stil in Texas at my buddies garage. I moved to OK a few months ago, and still settling in,, soon I hope to have the WC with me here. weather about to cool down where the closed cab would feel fun to drive in.

still, I have a bit of a ways to go on it before a 2000 mile trip! its never been on the road, so I am needing to 'Debug" the old gal a little at a time once here. I sorta got it running decent and then the move came, so little time spent with her. good luck with you new project. Keep in touch OZ... !
