Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
selling sounds sad, but my original intent was to restore a gpw, just could not find one. then this appeared and off i went. don't get me wrong, i am enjoying the hell out of this, and the learning process is wonderful. i have the gear and the weaponry for doing 17th airborne living history. i have both the gpw and converto trailer to restore for that project. i wrote a detailed history of the engineer bn from the 17th entitled ''blood on the talon'' (now out of print) and that is where my true passion lies.
since im not wealthy, i'll have to use this to fund the other projects. (two boys in college , one engineer, other veterinarian) and i have a move to TN coming up some time soon.
as far as cost goes, that has been a true learning experience also.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
Over the holiday I was able to clean up two drive shafts and get one painted and primed. As soon as my u-joints come in I can install all the drive shafts.
Today I sand blasted the bumperettes and began the first coat of primer. I had weld up two massive torch cut holes in them before proceeding. I'm still learning how to weld and grind, as there is still a bit of depression which could be filled, but it adds charachter

I also pulled the wiper motor out of the cab. It is a TRICO KSB 333-3 or 438-3. Hard to tell the model no. Im not sure if it is original from the factory or added later as a replacement to what ever was in it. I only have one with the angled mounting hardware to account for the slope in the roof where it mounts through.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
Today was prepare to work-work day. I re-positioned everything in the crowded workshop. THere are remnants of two GPWs, Dodge parts, tools, benches, camping gear and reloading materials. Despite the cluttery appearance I can get to every corner and side, I have space to take the engine apart and get the major parts to the machine shop, and my transmission is sitting next in line after the engine is moved out.
I have enough room to work around the rolling chassis when the brake and fuel lines come in. I probably won't have to move it again until after the entire train is bolted on. Can't wait to tear into the engine. Stand by for massive images!

This afternoon I began the tear down. I started with some general overview images for reference later.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
I started at the front and began removing accessories. Everything is bagged and tagged, then grouped in separate boxes by water, fuel, oil, electricity. Here is the water pump area taken apart starting with the fan, then the thermostat housing and the water pump. It looks like I might need a new pump.

I removed the horn mounting bracket, the ignition wires and the wire manifold and then took out the distributor.

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
The manifold is giving me some troubles. Thankfully Ernie called and let me know there is one more bolt underneath the center portion. I'll get on that tomorrow. For now it is soaking in PBB. I'm glad I did not pry (too hard)

Re: Restoring WC12 W-231808
My final removal for the day was the brake and cluthc pedals. I pulled off the end piece with a puller, but will need to hoist the engine once again to remove the bottom bracket that is holding the brake pedal in place. Tomorrow.....tomorrow......is only a daaaay awaaaaay! Its Miller Time, although I drink Stella!
