While I await rear axle parts I began to clean the front axle. I also opened up the differential cover to check the inside condition. Everything feels nice and tight and I see no unusual or excessive wear in any of the teeth. I think I will leave well alone and only replace oil seals, gaskets, and the like. I have a kit on order from VPW.

Sorry for the out of focus image. The ring gear was manufactured in August of 1941 and my WC12 rolled out very close to that time frame.

Scraped a little more goo off of the front axle. The more of this I remove before blasting, the easier it will be.

I started to loosen the nuts from the U-bolts. They moved easily with a breaker bar. It was far more easier than with the rear U-bolts. It was an uplifting moment.

No pics, but the hubs are blasted and primed. Later this week I'll install the hubs, seals, bearings and adjust the brake cams. I'll post some images then.

Now that I have the hub on I can adjust the two cams on each brake shoe as outlined in the TM.

1. adjust the brake shoe adjusting cam until the front shoe lining is solid against the brake drum and the wheel is locked
2. back off the cam until the wheel may be spun without interference
3. turn the cam at the shoe at the top "out" until the wheel is locked, then back off until free.

Once this is done I can adjust the Rear Wheel Hub Bearings IAW the TM. Step (a) is just removal of the wheel seal. axle and outer nut. I just did not want to scan two pages, crop, save etc. :o

The only difference is I am adjusting the hub bearings without the weight of the wheel on the hub. Special tool is shown above with the bearing nut installation

I worked on the other wheel hub today.

I installed the outer bearing and the lock nuts just as with the other hub. I then installed the two gaskets and the outer oil seal using permatex between everything. I inserted the axle and torqued the nuts to 35 pounds. I don't have pics yet, but I bolted on the wheels. Next step will be to install the springs and hang the rear axle.

I tried to replace the rubber and copper bushings in the knee shock plates. I have the NOS sets with the bushings, rubber and the pins. The rubber bushings are very brittle and tend to shear off on of the lips. I need to research that before proceeding. I might have to redo this part of the operation. Here is the kit and the removal/installation.

I finished the mock up of the rear axle with the springs to see how everything fits together. I have one bad u-bolt which I will have to replace and I think I will order new shackle lock bolts and nuts. The spring bolt is excessively long, but I can cut it off so as to fit under the rubber bumper when I get that far.

Lesson Learned...AGAIN

viewtopic.php?f=56&t=276913&p=1622237&h ... e#p1622237

Research first, then work. I even posted on this thread long ago. Its a product of too much time between work on the project

I will make sure I rotate the shackle to the correct orientation as per the original.

Looking good!

I know what you mean about not remembering something that one ends up doing or figuring out all over again. Been there done that....

Hi Oz,

Great watching your thread as I'm doing pretty much the same on my WC-7,although not quite as fast,i bought some of those Shock bushings over here in Europe from Wildenburg parts,so i will give them a go,i don't know if they are NOS or not ? hopefully they will just pop in..! thats what i hope anyway.
My springs are off getting new bushes put in as the mounting holes had worn oval,i hope i will remember how it all goes together,i don't think I'm taking enough pictures..at the time you think you will remember ... them a few weeks or months down the line you look at it and think ..humm how did that go together with all these nuts and bolts..which way round did this go.?
Keep up the good work, watching your thread as well as Zephs gives me the confidence to carry on and use as reference.
Cheers.
Paul.
