It has been far too long since I worked on the pig. I finally have some time and sand for blasting. I was able to prep the starter parts for the man who will rebuild it, I finished a few small parts for the rear axle and started on the first wheel hub. Will have to do some masking on the inside to protect the bearing and brake shoe surfaces. Almost done with one hub.

Remaining blasting for rear axle

rims
1 hub
finish the springs

Then I can prime, install bushings, paint and assemble

Blasted a split rim and ring, finished all of the rear spring parts and started on blasting the two wheel hubs. About 2 more hours of blasting and I can prime and assemble.

I'll be happy to clean this up and add it to the dodge.

I will have to rebuild my sand blasting nozzle. The ball valve and the fittings are abradded down to nothing after about 1500# of sand running through it. I think I can find what I need locally. I have plenty of nozzles, just need a new ball valve and fittings.

Dropped off the starter for assembly and armature cleaning. I'll repaint when that is complete. I should order my data tags soon also.

Repaired my sand blaster and went to work this morning. Finally a great and productive day. I finished all of the blasting except the two wheel hubs. About an hour left on those. I still have to chase the threads on the spring U-bolts. I can take the generator to my mechanic when I go and pick up the starter at the end of the week.

I think I will take the rims and rings with my tires and have them mounted, then spray the OD after masking. Not sure if that is the approved solution, but I'm open to comments there.

Beautiful job, Oz. I know how much sweat equity these things take. I was lucky enough to have the Base Hobby Shop at Kirtland for 100% of my sandblasting. Flight suit and respirator, I would go in at 0800 and depart at 1800. Did that for perhaps 3 days?? until done. Nothing like rust free metal to start again with

Its gritty work for sure. Must have been nice to mess up some one else's place with all that grit :D I know you still had to clean the base area up. I still have lots of parts to blast, front axle, cab, full box, and parts of the drive train. It saves lots of money, but slows things down.

I think I will begin assembly and then get the hubs done after taking a respite from the sand wars. It looks like DUNE in my parking area. Still no worm-sign though.

Finally returned to the WC after dicking around with 4 jeep hulks. I installed the 2nd brake parts on the rear axle and began the process of dry fitting all of the rear differential components. It has been a while since I was in there, so it took some time to familiarize myself with the process and to find a way to get the bearing tension adjusting screws in correctly without damaging the threads. It was a trial and error method for me. After two hours of effort, I have the chuck together with the pinion gear installed with all components except the oil seal. I will go back to the manual and make sure I have everything adjusted correctly before installing the oil seal.

A long while ago, while taking the rear diff apart I noticed that part 1B Rear pinion Oil Baffle Dodge PN 865671 was missing. I just re-discovered this fact when assembling the diff. I had to order one so it will be a week or more unitl I can get the final assembly and adjustments done. Thankfully I do not have to remove the chuck to get this part in. It slips over the pinion from the output side.

I wonder what the effect was on the function without this part in there.

All parts on hand, working ont he differential. I am following the TM having set the bearing tension and the backlash. Next will be to set the gear depth pattern between the pinion and ring gears. That is supposed to be done by moving the ring gear left/right via the two adjustment ring screws. That will come next and if all goes well, i can check the pinion bearing tension and close it up.

That was a royal pain in the a$$. It is done. I will button everything up and move to to finishing the wheel hubs and put the rear axle back together and hang it on the frame.

Rear Spring Bushings removed. Will press in new ones, and hone to fit pins. Ugly little suckers eh?
