bad waterpump?

Postby rich42gpw » Wed Aug 15, 2012 7:08 pm

It sounds like the bearings are going out on my M37s water pump but it is not leaking antifreeze. Is that common with M37s? Or could it be something else?

Time takes a toll as well as old antifreeze. How old is the pump?

I have never replaced it, so it may be 50 years old. I just don't want to replace it if that is not the problem. It sounds like waterpump bearings, but like I say it does not leak, so that makes me wonder.

If I need to replace it where is the best place to get one? John at Midwest Military has them for 75 bucks but they are not NOS Surplus City has them for 135 bucks but they still want an old trade. John also said you cant find rebuild kits. Any other ideas?

Surplus City says they have these water pump rebuild kits, has anyone done a water pump rebuild on an M-37? Is it like any other water pump rebuild, or is there a problem with that?
And Ben, what is PM me?

Be sure to check the water distribution tube behind the pump inside the block when you have it off. They tend to rust out. You'll have to pull the radiator and probably the grille to get the new one in.

My local parts store had a new GMB brand pump when I needed to replace the pump on my buddies WC-56, cost around $65, eliminates the need to grease the bearing like on the original pump. The part number is 120-2713.

Here's a link on Amazon, $58:

How do you grease the bearings on it? I might just need to do that

The original pumps have a grease fitting, the later aftermarket replacement pumps have modern sealed bearings, no grease fitting present. It takes special water pump grease to lube the old ones, but I've used wheel bearing/chassis lube before.

Some of the M-37's made in the late 60's did come with Ball Bearing Pumps as well as late replacement GI pumps.

On either of my M-37s I don't see anywhere to grease, I will have to consult my manual. I did not know that.

Early M-37's used the same Waterpump as the WC, there was a Grease Cup on the drivers side of the pump just behind the Pulley. I have NOS GI Issue Late M-37 Water Pumps.
