Jon,
Nice buy, could you elaborate on the engine some and maybe a photo? Was the LPG an after military service addition? Does it run and drive or in need of a little love first? I think I need a birthday present like that.
Cheers,
Rick

Re: My Birthday Present . to myself.
Engine is not the stock standard Rover 6cyl. It's been replaced by a GM Holden 6cyl. motor, 202Cu.in.
The general consensus is :- From the Landy Board I visit....
The original engines were not all that reliable apparently, the original to this one was replaced by the Army prior to it being auctioned off in '91.
So apparently, that replacement engine gave up the ghost and was replaced by the Holden.
The gas conversion was done after it fell into Civvy hands.
Maybe later, after I drive it a bit, I may put in an overdrive, free wheeling hubs etc.
As for drivability.... just needs the brakes checked, maybe the wheel bearings repacked, other than that, it's driveable.
Just organizing a trip next year to Cape York Via. Mt. Isa and the Gulf of Carpentaria, Round trip, mostly off road of about 4000km.
My son and I did the Cape this time last year, next trip is just a little different.

Standard practice here as they're dead set easy to find, and parts are readily available, and much cheaper.I've had both and much preferred the 186. 186 was in a series 2 and 202 was in a series 3. Found that the 186 was better in low range off road, but the 202 was a bit better getting up to speed on the highway(had it up to 130 once, quite scary, never did it again).

When there's mud, sand, and whatever else there is to walk through up in the jungle, I found them better than anything else available.

Re: My Birthday Present . to myself.
Thanks Oz.... poor bloke I bought it from spent 3 hours taking off the soft top and adding the hard top for transport yesterday. In almost 40C temps I definitely owe him a cold beer or three. Promised him we'd drop by on the next Cape York trip.... probably Aug next year.

Re: My Birthday Present . to myself.
I have it's history, Military and most of the civilian too.hell-fire wrote:JR, I have memories driving these things, should be much better with the Holden donk in it.
The original Rover 6 cyl was replaced prior to auction in '91, apparently, civvies don't know how to look after the Rover donk, it blew up and was replaced by the Holden 202. Some say the 186 is better for the low rev. torque range. I'll be doing some experimenting with it and maybe an overdrive might be added at some point, depending on availability, either that or replace it with an Isuzu 4bd1t diesel.
Have a read of this one John

I had a 110 with the Isuzu Diesel in it, totally un-stopable in the bush and run on next to no fuel, still regret selling it except in winter.
