"fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Hi All,
I paid way too much for a beat-up original Alemite "fire nozzle" type grease gun adapter, so I hought I'd get even by making a batch of repros on my lathe.
I'd like to know how much interest there is out there for these so that I can make up enough before sending out for plating. Price would be $20 for the nozzle, ball, spring and zerk fitting.

Post a reply if you think you'd like one!

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
They're part of the standard tool kit for the MB/GPW. Snap one onto the end of your grease gun and you can grease things (Wheel bearings, etc) that don't have zerk fittings.

Hi All
I've finished my run of adapters. I'll PM everyone who expressed interest. Thanks!
PS: I've reduced the price on GPW battery ground cables to $45ea. http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=267314

Bill....
Here's hoping there will be a stamping or something to identify these as repops vs originals. Otherwise they will just show up on Ebay for triple or more and be claimed to be a "just discovered item in an old jeep parts store that closed".

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Chuck,
I certainly understand your concerns but personally if it does get stamped or in some other obvious way (really wrong size and dimensions, etc.) identified as a repro then I would not be interested at all. There are always certain "tells" to a repro. But if it has to be obvious just to thwart the unscrupulous' desire to fleece the suckers then I'm not for that level of paternalism.
If we're going to do that then maybe all repro jeep parts should be permanently painted pink or otherwise altered so that they scream REPRO.
I'm not out to screw people but I'm not out to wipe there a$$es for them either if they don't do their homework. Same goes for e-pay, etc. many times it's a case of a buyer believing what he or she wants to believe even though all the signs of BS are there.
For me it's a case of personal morality. I won't knowingly harm anyone because I don't want to face my maker with that hanging over me. Karma is a b****.
Thank you,
Henry

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Henry...
I was thinking along the lines of the guy who buys a couple and goes to a jeep meet and brings them out one at a time after letting some grease dry on them. He innocently offers them for sale and even the most discerning customer won't be able to know if they are "real" or "repop"...they don't go for cheap these days so setting up a cottage industry to make money for scumbags should not be fostered here.
Trust me...they WILL show up as "original" and they WILL be sold for an original price.
I have one of them myself...but I have had pics for many years.
What is your opinion of these two:

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Hi Chuck
The one I've copied is the version you call "thin collar". As I was making these I was wondering if Alemite made them on one of their semi-autonatic screw machine lathes or subcontracted them out to a handful of small shops. If the latter, there could be all sorts of variations.
Just to let you and the world know, there is a way to check if a nozzle is original (or, if it is the original I copied) or is a "FUBAR copy". The original sample I used had a deep-drilled small hole (#53 drill). This is the hole that the grease exits the nozzle through. The original had a hole that extended most of the way through the neck of the adapter. Not wanting to break more drills than necessary, I drilled a larger hole through the neck with only the last 1/8" or so being the #53 hole. So, if you bring your dial caliper to the flea market, you can tell the difference.

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Cool Bill..
So...short small hole is "FUBAR"
Long small hole is original of one types or the other.
Works for me!

Re: "fire nozzle" grease gun adapters
Chuck,
I definitely understand your point. However, I hate the fact that all of us have to pay the penalty because some "scumbag" wants to dupe people. What makes it worse is there are some sheep who deserve to be sheared because their "I want to believe the story" light overrides their "BS warning" light. Yet, fooled time and time again due to their own willingness to remain clueless they say "there ought to be a law..." which ultimately penalizes the rest of us good guys who take it upon ourselves to do our homework and even share it with them.
The above has happened to me plenty of times (and probably still will). The difference is I blame myself.
Don't get me wrong, the proverbially truly vulnerable "widows and orphans" (the newbies of our hobby) need protection because they really don't know any better until they read these forums. However, IMHO there aren't many if any widows and orphans trolling for rare and esoteric jeep parts who need our protection. Especially when it comes to "fire hose" grease fittings. For that stuff it's usually guys like me who already know the inside story of how rare the part is and want so desperately to believe that we scored a "find" (before others) that we don't listen to the "BS Warning" light. Thus, being screwed by our own hubris or complacency is the price for that hubris and complacency.
At least I think it works that way in my utopia where everyone takes personal responsibility for their actions.
Thank you,
Henry
