GPW Engine block # GPW 38694

Post by garyv » Thu Nov 02, 2017 7:12 am

Can someone on here give me an idea of what a GPW engine block is worth.
It has couple cracks in the water jacket that need repaired but otherwise it just needs
some machine work and maybe a sleeve.
Thanks for your help

Probably 50-100 bucks for a core block

If you post the serial number and it happens to be the block from a GPW that another member owns, that could also increase interest. For example, if it happens to be 240019, I would be very interested.

I have $75 in getting the blocked baked, rotary blasted and mag'd. I won't be selling it for $50-$100.
The number on the block is GPW 38694. The font for the W implies it was cast in the Ford foundry.
I also have other parts stamped GPW including a complete set of rods. remainder of the parts are being baked and rotary blasted.
If no one here has any reasonable interest I will them on E bay.

If you wish to list it, you will need to place it in the for sale section with pictures of all components included and a price and location per forum rules. You ask a generalized question about the worth of a block that is cracked and needing sleeved. If you would have provided more information, the answer could have been different.

"cracks in the water jacket" is a broad term. These type cracks can range in severity from "no need to repair it" to "scrap block," so your assertion is correct. You may not be selling it at all, and you may be loosing your investment. If I had spoken with you before you spent the money on the diagnostic repairs, I would have told you to sell it untested for the aforementioned 50-100 bucks, then we would have determined a price for the extra parts you have with it and then determined a price for the package. spending money on tests and repairs is best advised as being left to the repairer and end user. If that ain't you, save your money. It is a long-standing understanding of restoring old vehicles that they cost more to finish then they are worth when youre done.

Sell them as untested parts, or sell it as a rebuilt motor. Nothing in the middle ever works favorably for anyone involved.

Despite your welcoming, pissed off tone at the reasonable response you garnered at your original question, you may have hit the nail on the head, and will have more invested than you accept when you sell.

now...post some photos, be descriptive and the folks around here will help you get to your answer. And keep the piss and vinegar on your side of the keyboard.

It's here. It has a crack below the distributor but it is repairable. I'll probably have it professionally repaired this spring. I have it listed on the trade board but wouldn't trade it before I have it repaired.
