Also known as a "clock block". Is there a number stamped on the water pump boss? This should be an early CJ block.

Re: FS MB ENGINE
Generally speaking, Willys (Wilson Foundry) blocks should have an MB serial number....that's how they came from the factory, whether meant for a jeep, a generator or a replacement. Some Wilson blocks did indeed go to Ford, and these blocks were unnumbered so Ford could stamp a GPW serial number on them. Some early VEP GPW's had GPW serial numbered Wilson blocks and I believe Ford also used some Wilson blocks during their mid 1943 production. GPW replacement blocks supplied by Ford came without a serial number from the factory.

Right on!Michael O. wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2017 8:03 pmAlso known as a "clock block".... This should be an early CJ block.
638632 clock block with 10-8 date was cast on Oct. 8 1945, after MB production.
This is an early CJ-2A block, w/"long" WP boss. These were typically not stamped on the oval pad. Missing a number on the water pump boss is not unusual - they get "lost" if the block deck has been milled during rebuild.

Re: FS MB ENGINE
Yes, you are correct..I wasn't entirely accurate in my description. I should have added that Wilson blocks that went to Ford were blank so that Ford could add the GPW serial number.
I suppose there is a possibility that Ford, in turn, sent some of these out as replacement blocks?
Generally speaking though, replacement blocks supplied by Willys should have an MB serial number.

Re: FS MB ENGINE
Got an in-focus photo? Does the pad have some unusual numbers/symbols stamped, like these?
If so, it's a post-war gear drive engine. S/N would be stamped on the water pump boss.

Re: FS MB ENGINE
The block in the OP photos though is an early CJ block. I had one of these Clock Blocks before but I traded it for a 1944 MB block...and it's now in a '46 CJ. My formerly owed early CJ block didn't have a serial number on the raised pad nor on the water pump boss (perhaps machined off as Sean suggested), but it did have those symbols on the raised pad as Sean has shown. It was also chain driven, not geared.

I dont think there is anything there, will have a good picture tomorrow when the unit is out in the open, having trouble posting pics so we will see about that issue.
