Manual locking hub deinstall
Can anyone give me some advice how to deinstall this manual locking hub? I cannot take out the drive shaft for some reason. I can get it to come out about an inch and then it stops (picture 2).

It should just pull off. Look for a locking ring, but I doubt it. It's probably just stuck from being on so long. Try some penetrating oil and a wire brush to cut the old grease.

When I pull it out, it feels like it is hitting metal on metal more towards the center of the vehicle.lt.luke wrote:It should just pull off. Look for a locking ring, but I doubt it. It's probably just stuck from being on so long. Try some penetrating oil and a wire brush to cut the old grease.

Re: Manual locking hub deinstall
It probably is. The axle sort of free floats, splined into the differential carrier and the drive hub which has been replaced bgay your lockout. You shouldn't hurt anything prying against the lockout to dislodge it from the outer shaft splines.whatthecrunchyo wrote:When I pull it out, it feels like it is hitting metal on metal more towards the center of the vehicle.lt.luke wrote:It should just pull off. Look and feel for a C clip inside that lockout before you pull too hard. The outer axle splines are straight, and should be little to keep it on there.
I suppose if the axle got REALLY hot, the lockout could be gallded to the axle.
You're trying to save the lockout?

I don't care for the lockout at all, but I can't seem to find any drive flanges on the internet right now so I have to salvage it unfortunately

Re: Manual locking hub deinstall
I ran into this problem with mine. They were Sears brand and had a small retainer clip on them. I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get them off, but suspected there was some sort of ring in place. So I Googled "Remove Sears Locking Hubs" and got this: http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/sears ... 23025.html
If you know your brand, try the same thing. You might have the same luck I did.
I love the internet-except for the part where my microwave spies on me.

Re: Manual locking hub deinstall
Why not get a wheel bearing nut wrench and remove the hub, drum and spindle to see if the axle was installed correctly in the first place. I'll bet if you contacted Ron Fitzpatrick Jeep Parts, he might have a new or a used set of drive flanges.

Ben
How is he going to remove the hub of he can't get the locking hub flange off?
He cannot get the nuts that hold it on?

Re: Manual locking hub deinstall
Pry bar, and use care not to pry at the location of the 6 bolt holes in the hub as they can be damaged. Two pry bars may be needed, use a quality tool heavy enough to do the job.

Re: Manual locking hub deinstall
Just pry it off, threaded end of axle shaft is already cut off so the shaft needs replacing anyway. Can always take it off in pieces with a grinder and a cut wheel. Or a really big cut wheel and cut between the drum hub and locking hub piece.
I have all the parts to rebuild it as do many people on here.
