The Ford part number is given as GPW-17035, while a few pages later the Ford number is GP-17035, an older part number stile.
Luca, the GPW part number is probably a mis-print. I have seen hub nut sockets without any apparent markings on them which could be KH sockets.

I had 4 Nos WOA sockets, 2 I sold ages ago and one I gave away I believe to Marc Open when he visited me. I had cleaned those 3 up and they were black under the cosmoline. I was looking at the pic I posted above of the one I kept still in cosmoline and it appeared to have a greeness about it. I just went and had a closer inspection of it and it is OD under the cosmoline. Be buggered

I have to duck out at the moment (work calls) so when I get back I'll clean it up and take some pics.....

Whoa...looky at that....first original OD painted WOA socket I've seen. Pretty cool....Nos just out of cosmoline. It has the same colour and semi-gloss finish as the tyre pump I have.

hub wrench

Post by lucakiki » Wed Oct 05, 2005 7:42 am

Just as mine, Sean! OD, glossy, even if not a very shiny one, or more aptly semigloss.
The part number on mine is exactly stamped as yours, that is you read it from the hexagon end to the round end.
The other wrench I have, the unpainted/ metal finish one, has the part number stamped the other way round, beginning at the slot side and going towards the hexagon side.
There is a slight difference in the slot size, so performing the adjustable 11" test some wrench passed in one and not in the other,by a tiny bit.
Thought you might be interested.

G'day all,
My Ford crank handle is OD (most of it is gone now) without any trace of black paint, although the original surface of the metal appears to have been black, like on hot-rolled steel. My Willys crank handle was also OD, as is my jack.

Reviving this (very) old thread - I have just got hold of a NOS Ford GPW hand crank and under the cosmoline it is bare metal - never had any paint on it. I bought it from Thierry at Crazy Jeep Stock Fr. I think he has another, plus some Willys ones - dont know if the rest are NOS though.

Is there any way to confirm this was not a salvage/repack from the French Army after WWII? Here in the states we have, I believe accepted the Ford hand crank as being BLACK from the factory and often ended up with a repaint of OD at some point.

The packaging it came in would be a clue here I think....and of course a photo of the "FORD MH" stamping on it as well as a good close-up of where the notched end that fits into the crank nut is welded to the shaft itself.

Does not appear to be a repack Chuck - no marks on the shaft where it goes through the bumper. The 'MH' is faint (and my camera is not that good) The drive dog is one piece to the shaft (not welded) there is still cosmoline inside it.

If you intend on using it on the GPW, then clean and paint it a Satin or similar BLACK and you should be OK....If you like OD then you can say it was repainted in the motorpool if you want...

I thought the ones that just said FORD were for the tractors. I also thought all military cranks had to have GPW on them. I guess someone should have told me when I had the chance to buy a couple that just said FORD.

Yes - bit of a dilemma - if I use it I will have to protect it with paint or something - which seems a shame.

You will need to find one with "FORD MH" on it, without the kinks where it zig-zags, with the correct fonts, with the correct drive on it, of the proper dimensions as well as a few OTHER features to look for( that pointing out to the humpers should not be done) and even then...the repop guys have been working on this fine piece of steel so there are some CLOSE copies out there.

Hi Chuck , thanks for your opinion it is appreciated.
I have done my homework on this one and if it is repro it is about as good as it will get. As I don't have a high resolution camera I will have to use the written word a bit.
The material is cold rolled steel with the correct dimensions. The drive dog is hot forged in a press with a die to bring it to the required dimensions and and not a separate piece welded on. The tip of the dog is machined the same as any original I have seen on here and elsewhere. The drive dog 'hooks' are relieved on the outer edge - they are not square at the tips. At the other end the tip of the handle has a chamfer machined on it. The bends are cold formed and the inside of the bend nearest the shaft has tool markings reminiscent of the markings found on the top bow swivel bracket. There are no flats or kinks and the radii are correctly formed and tighter than the MB type. The outer bend does not have the above marks which means dual tooling -
The Ford logo is of the correct font and formed using a concave stamp. The 'MH' in a circle is present and not in line with the bottom of the ford logo- it reads MH and not something unreadable. The logo is not heavily indented as repro seems to be (at least all the ones I have seen have been).
In fact to me if it was rusted and worn with a bit of black paint on it would be the real deal.
Usually in life if a thing seems to be too good to be true then it probably is....

regards Barrie

Hi Barrie...I was posting in response to 1943willys post, not yours....I believe yours is an original from the description and pics. I am not sure if the "FORD MH" was put on with a convex stamp or more likely, a roll stamp but I think the blanks were so marked before the process was completed as they are found in many places on different original hand cranks...

Good score!
