Roger, my drain plug is priceless: actually, they both are! Got them from Norway: I did not pay for them, and I would never sell any of them. I kept the transparent bag with the note : take good care of it! Frank

Tool Kit Treasures?

What are the hardest to find items? I don't know about the order, but here are some that will be difficult to find....and not so difficult....

SPW.....hardest to find: GPW marked, then the GPW APCO, then the WO marked, then a dogfight over the Mossberg vs the Mossberg 41-W varieties.

Drain Plug Wrench....Hardest to find: GPW tapered, then GPW, then MB, 41-W

Brake Bleeder Wrench.....hardest to find: GPW, then MB, then 41-W

Grease Gun Adapter......hardest to find: 2 1/2" long "first type" nozzle, the arrow shaped "fourth type" for lever, then the "third type" for lever, then the "second type" for push and lever

Hub Puller.....hardest to find: "F" marked WO, then the plain WO (not sure if the 41-W was available in WWII?)

So what is the very HARDEST of them to find overall?

1) GPW Tapered Drain Plug Wrench
2) GPW Spark Plug Wrench (or GPW APCO?)
3) Grease Gun Adapter: Nozzle type 2 1/2" (with the zerk!)

This is what I have seen here in California, on the gee, on Ebait and in Portland and Alameda Nationals...

Chuck, The hardest item to find? I always think it is the item you don't have.

Hi Chuck, I have been lucky enough to find a couple of these. I believe they are the correct adapter. But, Mine are 2" long with the zerk. Is there a drawing somewhere showing them at 2-1/2" long?

Thanks.

Roger, I don't have mine around here right now, but you may be correct on the length with zerk at 2"....I will check that when I am able to get to the tools. Yours in the photo with tape measure looks EXACTLY like the one I have, but mine is not painted.

Jeff.....nice little drawing, it will help guys spot these things at the bottom of boxes of "junk" hopefully and they can be rescued!.
Can you post if yours has no mfger marks, icons, numbers or anything to identify it at all? Can you guys confirm if the zerk has a check-ball in it or not? I believe that it should probably be like the zerks on the early jeeps and NOT have the check-ball....but I have not seen enough to tell...

Two of the three I own(ed) have had the check ball, If thats what its called. Spring and a ball bearing.

Mine came to me exaclty as pictured in the sticky, no zerk, no mgf mark or name. It was removed from a grease gun prior to being sold to me, but I don't know if it was a 5585 or the more modern style of WWII military grease gun. Sorry, I wish I knew more.

Jeff...I hear that there are more guys than just you with the adapter missing the zerk....so I think you want to find one without the visible check-ball if you can, but it would have come with a zerk anyway, that would be the preferred type.

Chuck from what I can tell .....with and without check balls are the same unit. I think the check ball is been removed to mount to grease guns. It is just a spring and a small ball bearing, easily removed. The trick is finding the correct zerk fitting. I found an old mechanics shop locally that has been in operation since before the war.

They were in a plain box with no name so I could not date accurately but they were in the ball park. Jackpot!...:)

I got three zerks in the same box I found my adapter in...but they had check ball and I noticed that the hex itself is much shorter than the hex on the no-check ball zerk in the adapter...

Looking at original tie rod ends, the pressed-in zerks they have (these are FORD marked ends) do not have the check ball....so I have thought that these were the EARLY style zerks....have you noticed that?

If you NEED one of these early style zerks, take a look at the two zerks on an old drag link.....the taller hex and no check ball.....so you can swap one to obtain a correct style for the adapter if you want...

Hi Chuck,
I'm thinking we are talking apples and oranges.

Two of the grease gun fittings I have, Look like this (crude drawing) with an internal check ball and spring in the adapter. Not in the zerk fitting. Like Jeff I found all of mine attached to grease guns, so none had the zerk fitting.

The trick is to find a zerk that has more of a hollow end, this allows the ball to fit into the zerk fitting more. Zat make sence?

Hmmm...haven't tried to take the zerk off my adapter, so the differences are something I had not noticed.....

I was surprised the one that sold on ebait for $123.00 did not go for $150.00.....but it is the only one I have seen come up for sale there or on the gee so there was no "comp" to check it against....
