Silly question

Post by prestoncohunter » Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:25 pm

I realize this is a very newbie question but I see several folks refer to a TAXI number. I'm pretty sure they aren't calling a cab :D :D so what is a TAXI number.

Not a silly question. The TAXI numbers aren't exactly self explanatory. Welcome to the tool forum. :D
THIS thread should get you started.

Ok I read the topic indicated and think I understand some of it. And maybe I missed it.

While sorting thru these tools of my FILs some of which I suspect he brought back with him from his time with the SeaBees, what should I be on the lookout for to say this is a wartime piece vs something he bought for his garage in the early 50's. If that makes any sense.

One quick tell is usually the lack of chrome on anything steel.

If I were you I would lay it all out, take photos, and post them. It seems like a big task. But the distinctions between wartime and pre-war or post-war features, construction, styles, markings (brand, model, COO, etc) are many, complex, and defy an easy answer, and are especially hard to describe for discussion, without photos.

The house is about an hour and half away but I'm planning on going down either Saturday or Monday and will try and lay some of them out and start taking pictures.

Thank you all so much for the help.

I have gotten a real kick out of figuring out the obvious militaria (knives, web gear, compasses, etc) but never thought about the tools till a I stumbled across a Chamber Brush for a BAR and a member on US Militaria forum told me about this site. Though with him being a SeaBee I probably should have thought of tools.
