oil can

Post by khakiweb » Tue Jan 02, 2018 2:16 pm

Thought this antique shop find might be interesting because of the OD paint on it.

Lightly stamped "GEM MFG CO PITTSBURGH"; has a 4" base with a 4" brass spout.

I like the OD paint as well! As others have mentioned on this site, we should take the Raritan figures with a pinch of salt, but they used a similar shaped spout in one of their publications. I followed suit:

That's good spotting, Cliff. I've had a couple of oilers with those spouts.

I wonder what an oiler with that style of spout was ordered for?
2nd/3rd Echelon tool kit or some type of vehicle?

Appears to be standard spout modified with some copper tubing added. Perhaps the mechanic wanted a faster way to squirt GO-90 into JEEP steering gears.

Looked again this AM and guess what, the WWII surplus GEM setting on my shelf has that same necked down spout and is painted Ford Gray. couldn't quite make out khakiweb's photo before. Cataract surgery changed all that. 20/20 now  These gray Gem oilers appear to have brushed on paint.

When looking fir a correct G503 or GMTK oiler you need to be careful that you are getting one from the original manufacturer and not a reproduction. On the first picture below, all of the oilers are original except the repro on the left. Watch for a crimped bottom on the repro rather than a welded bottom on the original. The second picture is a group of various reproduction tools.

Am confused, have two Gems in front of me that were surplused during immediate post war period and have been on the MV parts shelf since then. Both have crimped in bottoms.

Pictures? All of the repro oilers that I've seen have been marked Eagle. The crimping is visible from the top. The threads for the spouts are slightly different as well. Your Gem marked oilers are likely original.

And I realize we may have a slight difference in terminology. Have two or three others under the hoods of my CCKW, MB, etc. All were surplus or removed from surplus WWII MV's we bought from Uncle Sam approximately 45-55 period.
No flea market stuff.

I am convinced that on Eagle oilers the feature distnguishing originals from repros is the way the base was crimped. If the crimping is visible when the oiler is standing on a flat surface, then you are looking at a repro.
