Do they fit in some kind of rivet gun or what?

I believe they fit into a special purpose rivet gun for operation underwater in salvage. Installing a plate over an opening in the hull.

Hercules was also a HUGE US Army supplier. Powder, blasting caps, explosives, primers, detonators, demolition kits. Anything and everything that has something to do with firing projectiles or things that go boom, they made it. And they had plants in eight (8) different states (AL, DE, GA, MO, NJ, NY, VA, and WI)!!

That's a cool find.

Here's something similar from 1970. I was mistaken when I said rivets. I was thinking of the explosive driven STUDS. Still gives you an idea of the sort of application.

Greg,

Huge is an understatement for the Hercules military contract during WWII. The New Jersey plant alone had a $2 million contract to produce smokeless gunpowder. In fact it was the only Hercules factory at the time to produce smokeless gun powder.

Thank you,
Henry

Just a follow on comment. If you look at the container itself you will see a white ink stamping that says "PGH., PA. mSa U.S.A.". I think this stands for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mine Safety Appliances USA. As Pittsburgh is the "home" of MSA it appears that mSa does stand for Mine Safety Appliances and that the rivet expanders were manufactured by MSA with the powder supplied by Hercules. Incidentally, MSA made M1 helmet liners (and likely many other items) for the military in WWII so I'm pretty sure they were a big supplier too. :D

Thank you,
Henry

Your statement is correct on all counts. MSA is Mine Safety Appliances, I think they did make other items, of which I’m drawing a blank, and they were a rather large contractor.

MSA also made issue ear plugs... I have a small, white, plastic case for a set that was my dad's... MSA also made all sorts of breathing gear...

Don't forget that Hercules Powder was also made in....wait for it....Hercules, CA., where the California Powder Works set up shop. They had been moved around from Santa Cruz and San Francisco eventually needed to find rural land for such an explosive business and ended up in the San Pablo Bay area. They sold powder under the name of "Hercules" and the town that grew up around it that worked there became "Hercules, CA"....DuPont bought them out then had multiple plants producing under the brand name of "Hercules Powder"....and that's the rest of the story....sorta.

Paulie will add to that perhaps, he lives in....wait for it.....Hercules.

PS....Mine Safety Appliances also made First Aid Kits.
