Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
It’s good that you have the screwdriver bit, that’s one I’m missing for my set. If the part numbers in the set start with M, that means that the set is 9/32” drive. The spinner that you need is an M-4. It looks to me as if the ratchet is stamped with a G which would mean that it was made in 1945. I believe that was the final year that Snap-on produced the 9/32” drive tools. I ran across three 9/32” drive flex handles recently at an estate sale. I used two of them in my 9/32” sets but have an extra if you would like to add it to your set. They were all made in 1945. The bottom one in the picture is the extra.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hello Gentlemen,
I have some interest in this thread as I am slowly putting together a 1/4" drive socket set as part of the M1A1 Heavy wrecker tool set. I continue to be stunned with the goodies some of you turn up with.
Here is the TM picture of it.
And the listing of the sockets.
The listing for the bar.
I settled on Craftsman underline circle H sockets for this tool box. Here an example.
This what I have collected thus far. The 8pt is wrong for this set.
As well as the swivel head bar, I have the 7/32, 11/32 and 3/8 sockets and have opted for single hex for this set as I have yet to see a double hex in these sockets. However, in my ignorance, I have bought (all from epay = expensive) several close-but-not-close-enough sockets which are now up for swap/trade. To this end, I am hoping that some may be able to help me/I help some. The down side is that I am in Australia and shipping generally doubles the cost of these items for me. These are simply non-existent downunder.
To Swap/trade: (sr=surface rust)
1/4" drive sockets-
- 1/4" underline H 8pt.
- 1/4" underline BE 6pt. sr
- 9/32" non underline H 6pt. sr
- 5/16" underline BE 6pt. sr
- 5/16" underline BE 8pt. sr
- 7/16" underline BE 6pt. sr
Also seeking some 3/8" and 1/2"dr. items.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Sam.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hi Sam,
Interesting set. Are you sure there's no other 1/4-inch handles listed in the SNL? The photo makes it look like there're two (2) handles in the box. Or something else in the box with the hinge or flex head handle at least - and whatever it is, it's too big in diameter to be the cross bar. Maybe a sliding tee handle, with the drive head slid all the way to the left? That's what it looks like to me. Also, where is the SNL page for the hinged or flex head handle? The page you are showing with the bar is the cross bar for the hole nearing the end of the hinge handle, to turn the hinge handle like a tee bar. See if there is another handle listed on the page where the actual hinged handle is listed.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hi Wingnut,
Hmmm, good question, I've never noticed that, that I recall! Sure does look like a Tee handle.
I had a very careful look through the list in the TM, there are offset hinged handles, speeder handles, ratchet handles, and that's it for the sockets. The 3/8"dr. set, 1/2"dr. set and 3/4"dr. set do not have tee handles either.
So, I dunno what that is. Maybe that item is an error? Wouldn't be the first time. Anyone?
Sam.

Maybe it's just a trick of the light or shadow or something. The hinge handle shown in the set is listed on that page. It's the 41-H-1502-75.

Yes, it could be.
Yes, I thought so.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
The 1/4 " drive Snap On sockets sets were introduced only in 1945: a fact that should be kept in mind when assembling an earlier than 1945 General Mechanic Toolbox.

Re: Wartime 1/4" drive socket sets
Hey Sam!
Previously, we identified that box and tools as P&C, correct? So, it would make sense that the midget set is also P&C.
I do recall you saying that you were going with Craftsman for the complete set when we identified the box.
How’s the search for 3/4” drive stuff coming along?
To my eye, it looks like the handles in the box are the flex head (breaker) and the sliding T bar.
I have a couple of (H) sockets but I’ll have to check on the sizes. I know I can come close to a full set between the various New Britain made brands though. If you’re at all interested in a mixed brand set. They would all have the same appearance, but brands would be Husky, None Better, New Britain, Craftsman BE and (H). I’ll look this evening (maybe at half time and compare what I have in total across your list.
