Thanks - I don't know how much you could put on that handle, but 73lbs has to be pushing it, even with that steel strap core.

Yet we have never seen one of these with the obvious modification of one solid handle bolted to each end.

I was surprised to see this box offered on the auction site and even more surprised to see the asking price of $350.00! Wow!

Looks like that box is either a different era, or a different manufacturer than yours. The handle, where it bolts to the lid is different. And, 3 small hinge elements, where yours has 1 long piano hinge.
You should offer your box at $200 and make some quick cash!

In comparing my Navy box with my other Kennedy cantilever boxes there are several minor differences. The flat area on the top where the handle attaches is narrower. I thought that only the stamping would be different.

I found another partial Blue Point bolt extractor set on eBay and it had the pieces that I was missing in my NAF set. Here are a couple of pictures of the doner set and my keeper set completed. As was suspected, it was pretty clear that the kits were supplied by Ridgid since a number of the tools were marked with Ridgid part numbers.

I was able to complete this set yesterday with the addition of a correct 3/16” socket and a wartime finish 6” extension. Here are some pictures showing the details of the set.

Thanks, Dave. Actually Tin Medic spotted it on eBay and generously let me buy it for my NAF box. We were surprised that the bidding didn't go higher with the rarity of the item. One other Plomb collector in Southern California has one as well.

That's a good point Don.

I've been completing my pile with any Plomb item marked "Made in USA" since that marking was pretty much 41-47, but that means I have a few 46 and 47 pieces in there.

What date codes should I be looking for to keep to 41-45 please, or alternatively what are the codes for 46 and 47 I may wish to avoid?

regards
Gordon

Gordon,
I wish that there was a definitive answer to that question but I'm afraid that there are more questions than answers. There have been some theories advanced about the codes we see on some Made in USA Plomb but there are just too many contradictory examples to convince me. At this point, until somebody comes up with something conclusive, I'm not worrying about the '46 or '47 tools that may be in my sets. There are just too many tools with supposed wartime dates that look to be chrome plated. Just my opinion.

Thanks Don

I was fairly confused myself. I'm happy with anything "Made in USA" marked, but I have seen a few items that are obviously chrome plated so I'm avoiding them as probably 46-47.

This has always been and still is the best COA. It's really hard to go wrong with Plomb. Anything with the Los Angeles is pre-war. Anything with the MFD USA is post-war. Anything that is MADE IN USA and plain steel is good. Anything that is MADE IN USA but plated is suspect (less than good, if 'suspect' offends). I've had plenty of wartime Plomb tools that had no date codes and really didn't even pay attention to the letter-letter date codes until others did. Unencrypting their system is a mainly academic endeavor in the sense that it would be nice to know when exactly a certain tool was created in certain applications, but it's largely unnecessary.

As time has gone on, I have found several more pieces for my NAF toolbox. Sometimes having this collection results in finding multiples of the same tool, without necessarily trying. Here are a few more pictures.

Len Jones recently shared with me an NAF cantilever toolbox he found on the auction site in the UK. It is particularly unusual in that the manufacturer remains a mystery. It isn’t a Kennedy box like mine nor does it have the details indicating it was made by Simonsen. I’ve only seen one matching box found by a fellow collector in the San Francisco Bay Area and that one was not NAF marked. It came with several tools inside, some of which may have been wartime. Here are some pictures sent to me by Len.
