No question, you found some great stuff! I've never found the double ell handle at the flea before. That's a great find. As are the 2 knives!
Those vintage hammer handles are crazy long.
I have to ask, what's the axle out of?
Can we get a pic of that Irwin style screwdriver that's missing the wood scales? How is that marked?
Looks like you've found just a few wrenches too...

Thanks, Don and Greg, both! I'll definitely hang onto these knives! Jason, the TL-29 came from the auction site, when I never thought I'd get a 41-K-370. That knife came from a friend, who believes he (had) two of them. I scored some non-G503 stuff at a local auction, and the trade was made...good for both of us. The TL-29 will go into my small collection of the type, but this one is my only WW2 vintage TL-29. 95% of the wrenches came from the Aberdeen MV show.

Truth be told, the double ell and the knives weren't from the flea. The ell was from the Aberdeen show.

The axle is an F script for my GPW (short side). I managed to break the original, and have been running on a modern production (not even a repro) for several years. Will paint it and get back to original style shortly.

Makes sense to me, and it synchs with the accepted view that the shank-marked Irwins are post-war. Wish we had a larger sample size to try to confirm/deny this viewpoint, but it's a start.

Looks like Roger posted the cast marking on his Gov. Stock Irwin in THIS thread. May want to put some pictures of your screwdriver over there as well.

I had forgotten about that effort. I saw one with loose scales not long ago & left because of that. Oops

Help, Please!

Post by gpw_42 » Tue Jun 06, 2017 7:25 am

All,

Requesting your assistance in finding a 1 5/8" 6 point tail stock wrench (see photos below, taken aboard the USS Alabama, in Mobile Bay). I'm hoping that a group of us scouring our sources may help to locate this hen's tooth. The wrench is for an 18" Lodge and Shipley lathe, located aboard the USS North Carolina (BB-55), located in Wilmington, NC. During WW2, she fought throughout the Pacific campaigns from Guadalcanal, through Iwo Jima to the beginnings of the Occupation of Japan: http://www.battleshipnc.com/about-the-s ... campaigns/ Since about 1960, the ship has served as a memorial to those North Carolinians who died in the war.

I learned of the need for this wrench while volunteering in the machine shop. I recently rejoined a small group of other volunteers (one of whom has 35+ years experience as a machinist) in the process of repainting the machines in the shop from the post-war haze gray to their correct wartime charcoal black. We're also working to return another 40mm mount to training (rotating) and elevating/depressing under kid power; since none of us live close to the ship, work takes place over long weekends, so it's going to be a long-term project.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide,
Steve

That looks like a common tool on multiple machines. Dimensions and markings would help differentiate the one you want from the one you don't.

Steve,

Is that a wooden knob on the end of the handle? Or just unpainted steel with a dark brassy patina?

Wingnutt, it's unpainted with patina.

Luke, there are no specific markings which we're searching for. I'm pending a response from the guy who's a machinist about the length of the wrench, but the critical measurement is 1-5/8" across the 6 point opening; I think it's 12"-18" long. MTF.

It's been a few weeks since I got out tool hunting, but this weekend was a 100 mile long garage sale, which starts fairly close to my house. While sorting through innumerable vendors of kids clothes and Beanie Babies, I found a couple of (new to me) flea markets along the route, and was able to come away fairly well for the weekend.

Desmond Stephan Simplex 400 vise (should have a base to rotate, which I learned when I got home). At least it's from a List A vise manufacturer.

Engineer Wrenches:
41-W-1008-10, Billings 1028S Vitalloy 5/8" x 25/32"
41-W-1008-10 Bonney 1028S Bonalloy 5/8" x 24/32"
(not GMTK) Bonney 1725B Bonalloy 1/2" x 9/16"
41-W-1012-5 Bonney 1731A 3/4" x 7/8"

1/2" drive items:
41-H-1505 New Britian NS-40 ratchet w/cross bar (from different vendors; cross bar will go with my Husky)
41-H-1508 Plvmb 5480 speeder
Sockets:
41-W-3009 Bonney D18 (CV) 9/16"
(not GMTK) Bonney D21 (CV) 21/32"
41-W-3009 Indestro -SUPER- -1218 9/16"
41-W-3015 Mustang MT1222 11/16"
41-W-3015 SK 40122 11/16"

41-C-1106 Cornwell #27 1/2" chisel
41-W-449 Vlchek 11" auto adjustable wrench
Herbrand tappet wrench (9/16 x 5/8, this is to be a user, not GMTK, but....)
Lufkin X-46 ruler. Probably not military, but useful around the garage.
Unmarked brake line flare kit part (civilian, replacement for my kit)

Recent pickups, which include:

MVMTS Correct
41-P-3640 PUNCH, drive-pin, solid, taper, type VIII, clsass C, 1/8" diam (Mayhew/Made in U.S.A.)
41-P-3642 PUNCH, drive-pin, solid, taper, type VIII, clsass C, 1/4" diam (Mayhew/Made in U.S.A.). Have 3x excess, if anyone is looking.
41-S-1076 SCREWDRIVER, common, heavy duty, integral handle, type III, Class B, length of blade 6" (unmarked).
41-W-991 WRENCH, engrs., 7/16 x 3/8" (P&C 2814)
41-W-2452 WRENCH, safety screw, 3/8" hexagon (UNBRAKO)
???? WRENCH, 9/32" for ignition set

Not correct
Craftsman underline 7/16 x 3/8 DBE (just b/c I like Craftsman tools from the era)
Barcalo Buffalo 9/16 x 5/8 DOE (wrong size, and I think wrong style of markings)
41-S-???? Screwdriver, common, heavy duty, blade 8" (unmarked). Is this for a different set?
GAGE, thickness set, Starrett 172A (should have 9 blades; only has 7 blades: 10, 4, 6, .003, 8, 12, 15). No idea why they're on there out of sequence.

If anyone wants closeups of a particular tool(s), please let me know. It amazes me how much the forum has slowed down over the summer. But when I realized I hadn't posted to this thread since June, it sort of makes sense.

Good to read your enthusiastic posts Steve ... love that U S Army stamped knife! Here's a link to my theory on FSN marked Irwin screwdrivers. They all appear to have a "J" on them which I'm thinking means "J" e e p!
