Extinguisher 58-E-208
For some reason I have always wanted to find the Extinguisher 58-E-208 so imagine my excitement as a package was pushed through my (metaphorical) letterbox this morning.
This is a Phister 1B which is shown in the SNL G27 Ord 6 1945 and I have found several other images which appear to show the same extinguisher.
I am going to restore it back to its red colour.

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
It might be worth it Steve, I have seen some others in Green as well with Wartime dates but they all seem to have the Suffix EM after the 1B.
This one is clearly dated 1944.

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
Having looked closer at the EM marked labels I think it stands for 'Emergency Materials' As the labels seem to state
'Built to Emergency **********(unreadable) Alternative Specifications to Conserve Critical Materials'
My Extinguisher is very copper and brass heavy.

Roger,
Don't be so quick to restore it back to its red color. look at the Phister 1 gallon fire extinguisher hanging on the wall in the photo part way down in this thread.

Thanks,
Henry

Steve,
Nice find. I'd get that extinguisher. I think you can probably find a reproduction decal for it should you desire.
Thanks,
Henry

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
I get what you are saying Henry as that one looks highly polished. My Extinguisher came from Suffolk which was home to many USAAF bases and had been red originally which had been poorly stripped. The reasons I want to paint it red again are that I believe it came over in the early days of US involvement and the original colour that remains. I am also keen on mixing the colours up a bit.henry501 wrote:Roger,

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
Roger,
Totally understood. My own 1943 dated extinguisher is painted red. I need to get a replacement hose as mine is dry rotted. Otherwise everything else is in good shape and just needs to be cleaned up. The charge is gone though and so ultimately it will be a display piece as I'm fairly sure I can't get more CTC.
Anyway here are a couple of photos.
Let me knownif you want more photos.

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
Thanks for the pics, that is the first one I have seen Red with the Emergency Material Label. Can you tell me what it says on the line after Phister 1B EM ?
I only have 1 can of CTC so not enough to share.

Re: Extinguisher 58-E-208
Roger,
It says: REG. U.S. - PAT. OFF.
But here's a photo of it.
Also, please let me know how you got the CTC? Presumably from the look of it it is WWII issue. I don't think it is legal to sell it or use it anymore. My understanding is it is a neurotoxin so not likely I'll be able to run out to my local hardware store to get some. Maybe I'll just try to pressurize my extinguisher with air (as I believe was the pressurizing agent) and leave it at that. Or... just clean it up a bit and leave it completely alone. No sense overdoing it only to do damage.
Thanks,
Henry

Hepatotoxin not neurotoxin. Still... not something I can just run down to my hrlardware store and get. Perhaps my dry cleaner though???

I couldn't help noting the marks from the lathe on the wooden handle, so similar to those found on every Walkers pump!Tin Medic wrote:I found one of those locally.
