Tire Chains

Post by timsresort » Sun Feb 19, 2017 5:20 pm

I'm hoping some of the guys on here that know a lot more about jeeps than me could identify these chains. They have ridden around with me in a Dodge bag for years, and were actually in a judged display with a command car years ago. With all the snow this year, I thought it would be fun to chain up the WC and go for a ride, until I found them to be way too short. Upon further examination, the only marking I can find is the 6.00-16, (with no brand to be found), which leads me to MB/GPW. They appear to never have been used, still coated in a tar-like substance, not cosmoline. They are about 72" long with 38 side links and 9 cross chains. They do not have a traditional cam-type tightening mechanism, just the S-hook shown. So what do you think? Original, repop, civilian, or something else? Thanks in advance, Tim

Here's some information about a pair of tire chains that came my way recently. You may find it useful in describing your set.

Wonderful story, Tim, on a terrific "delayed find," we might call it!

Thanks guys. So unknown brand or possibly Nixdorf-Krein for MB. With toluene coating. Very helpful. i guess I shouldn't have been thinking of running these. I don't have a jeep any more, what are they worth?

I note that these chains have eight links in each cross chain whereas "jeepdraw" suggests there should be nine in the Willys specification. Is this a feature of this brand of jeep tire chain as I see that other examples shown in "jeepdraw" also have eight links.

Sharp eye. I had not noticed. I do not know the answer. Perhaps the spec for the Nixdorf-Krein has a typo. There is no other tire besides a 6.00-16 that these would fit.
