U.S. GAUGE Co. Pressure Gauge

Post by Gordon_M » Fri Jan 27, 2017 7:28 am

I've seen a few of these on that auction site, more commonly rated for around 0 - 50 psig, sometimes even branded as Model A stuff. This one is rated at 20 - 120 psi, latest patent 1926. Would this have been used into WW2, and if so, for what ? Aircraft and truck tyres maybe?

I don't see anything similar when searching on here, and this is the first US item I've seen with the real spelling of gauge on it ... Still has the original pouch too.

Wonder if it is for artillery. Some of the cylinders use pretty high pressure.

No idea Steve. It has the same sort of car tyre mount as the lower pressure ones, so I wouldn't expect it to be for a fixed installation like a cylinder or receiver though.

Oh, that's in mint condition. What does it read in, inches of Mercury maybe?

I think so.......

It is bad practice not to put a unit of measurement on the scale.

Thanks. Would be nice if we could somehow relate later patents to the same company, to find out if the basic item was updated before WW2, but that would be a can of worms.

I might check for similar items with higher Patent numbers on, I suppose.

Here are all the Patents registered to the US Gauge company, I cannot see any updates relating to their pocket gauge so I think you have a good wartime gauge.

Interesting, thank you.

The same company has patents listed through 1942 so were still working during WW2 - result

I've also kept an eye on these on the UK auction site and missed out on them all! I just liked the name and the look and had not thought of them as in military use. The company also made military aircraft gauges. Here are a few more examples for which I kept the photos:

I've been watching them for a while. On the US and UK auction sites there have been some really large prices asked, compounded by even larger (read as 'ridiculous') postage costs from the US.

This one was the right price - about 10% of the top price I've seen asked - and already in the UK so minimum postage. Other points in its favour included the decent calibration (beware if there is a zero on the gauge and the needle doesn't point at it) and the original pouch. It will be going in my USAAF hip roof Type 2 case with the Plomb WF, PWA, & Ranger AT equipment.

Turned up today and I checked it out before filing it away in the USAAF case.

It is a push on gauge with no thread - hence no rotating nut at the joint. Reset button and gauge all seem to work, so just filed it away.

Finally acquired one of these at a bargain price! Here's a photo of it together with a Ford Model A example that's on the web (very expensive!). It still works and the scale suits a G503's tire pressures. I don't believe it's military in spite of the manufacture's name, but it's going in my GMTK box as an "extra"!
