I missed that 'Y' post. Even cooler then. And no, I don't know anything about the postwar knife.

Re: Interesting 41-K-370 (TL-29) knife
Thanks for the reply. I'll check out the thread. There was a second knife at the same place. I think the scales were wood, but the thing was in horrible shape, to the point the manufacturer stamps on the blade were completely obscured. I left it.mudbox wrote:Hey Luke. Meant to respond earlier, but I couldn't find the post I was looking for. The composite scales are post war. Early war knives had some brass dividers in them I think, and then late war had no brass (but for the pins) like my example up top here.lt.luke wrote:I bought a rough TL-29. Black scales that appear plastic, so it'll probably be post war. As I inspected closer, one of the blades has remnants of a "CENTER" marking. I'll try to take pics... anyone ever seen anything like this?
It is a Camillus, if that helps.
Per usual, Wingnutt has done some fantastic research on the wartime 41-K-370 and posted it for us HERE. Took me a while to track it down.
Thanks Steve. Looks like it was almost a full year ago that I won this knife off eBay. Ultimately, I could say that I would prefer a better marked example, but then I would be giving up the U.S.A. engraving and whatever history this knife has seen.gpw_42 wrote:Congrats on a GREAT score! Those knives are rare...some day, some day...
If you want to make an effort to make the US ARM more visible, you can try putting boiled linseed oil on that scale (or both, really). Somehow, the BLO sometimes makes cartouches on rifles more visible, and that's essentially what this is. No guarantees...but it'll be good for the knife scale, regardless.
Pea green with envy,
Steve
I hear you on the BLO and do use it regularly for both wood preserving and on plain steel to keep the rust at bay. Works great!

I could have posted this over on Wingnutt's impressive Camillus/41-K-370 treatise:
http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f= ... %27s+knife
but thought I'd put it here to include Phil's KaBar "U S ARMY" example that has made it across the pond!

Cliff,
Glad to see that it arrived safely but I'm even more excited to see it go in your fantastic keeper GMTK.

Yeah, the Camillus ad is very cool. I zeroed in on the "Army and Navy Electrician's Knife" (fifth from top on left/pg 34), of course. And of course they used one with a "TL-29" engraved on the scale for the figure! We know how far in the weeds we are with the PAL/Ka-Bar "U.S. ARMY" stamped 41-K-370. No chance for the Navy guys (with the "U.S.N." stamped Camillus versions)!

Here's another interesting knife to add to the thread. I don't believe this PAL US ARMY stamped electricians knife has ever been used. Hard to believe after 70 plus years.

Hi All
Phil
Nice find! I have one just like yours in one of my GMTK kits. I was not really sure about its vintage because the markings on the blades were so pristine.
I feel a lot better about it now !!! Thanks for posting it. That is one "Killer Snap On Set" you're building
Thanks,
Dave

Electrician knives are getting harder to find at the flea market. They have become very popular with wood carvers. Dave I always enjoy seeing the great things you are finding. Keep sharing them.
