Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
I truly suffer from an embarrassment of riches. Many thanks to d42jeep for driving the item count over 80%. I would never have made the progress that I have without the help of so many of you. Today's additions were the two files - 8" half round and 6" mill file.

Nice pickup, Bill! They must have changed the design on that drag link socket shortly after to match the knurling on the sockets.
Let's see an updated shot of the box with the tools in it!

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
I did a quick check of Collecting Snap-on and it appears that the 3/8" drive drag link bit remained un-knurled throughout the war. I think maybe only the 1/2" drive bits were knurled. Good find, Bill! It's moving right along now!

Very cool, Todd. Just out of curiosity, did the set include any of the 1/4" deep sockets or punches/chisels? I'm wondering what the markings/finish are on them. Were the date codes consistent across the pieces (i.e., do you think it was bought as a set)?

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
Mornin' Bill. The answer is no. I believe this was a "lifetime" family box. There are pre-1927 pieces, all the way up through the '80s. I think this was somebody's great grandpa's, and passed down for a few generations. Very well taken care of though, except for the 1/4" tools, which as Greg pointed out, were probably decayed by the spinner handle rotting away and off-gassing. Here are the chisels and 1/4" deeps that were in the box.

Found one of my unicorns - a 1944 dated STM-9 9/32" deep 1/4" drive socket.

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
I continue to enjoy the generosity of others in moving this project along. The latest updates are the F-21 socket and 824 chisel.

Almost current. I just need to add the F-21 and 824.

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
Wow, it's been a while since I've been able to add anything to the big red box. Here's a S-608 punch, S-816 chisel, a handful of 1944 dated sockets, and STM12 deep 3/8" socket. Almost 87% now!
