Hi Greg
You guys are way to fast for me by the time I type one reply and send it there are two or three more post's waiting to be read I have not seen a break down of a putty knife showing what each of the parts are called that is why I say rivets and pins and that is why I misunderstand sometimes ie: bolsters and reinforcement plates now I know that.I wont get those mixed up any more Thanks for setting me straight on that Still learning
Thanks again
Dave

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Dave,
No worries. I was wondering because, believe it or not, I don't actually have any putty knives on hand right now to inspect for myself, my old photos are typically one side only, and I was curious if they were really pins or all rivets of different sizes and/or different size heads. Don confirmed.
Don,
It's a cool logo, in the catalog version anyway. I'll post a scan later.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Dave,
My pleasure regarding the bolsters. Hope my reply didn't seem too terse, I just wanted to get a reply out there as soon as possible. Also... NEVER apologize for asking questions. When any of us on these Boards gets so complacent in our collecting or information sharing that we think we know it all and at reluctant to share information then we are doomed. Questions from new guys get us thinking and possibly seeing things in a fresh light that may change some long standing (and possibly incorrect) shibboleths. Remember all of us were "the new guy" at some point.
As to the pin in the bolster. Not sure when they put them in but I suspect they were done that way to prevent the bolster from detaching. I have a United States Cutlery marked putty knife that is clearly missing the bolster (fell off or was broken off and you can see a hole milled right through the tang of the blade where a pin would go through the bolster so, putting two and two together and coming up with 5, I presume that is what the pin was for. Although in the case of my knife it didn't work so well.
Thanks,
Henry

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
All,
Here we go. My collection of putty knives FWIW.
From left to right... first three are Red Devil "Irvington, NJ" (within that. Group the first two are S the third is F). Next three are Russell, next is the United States Cutlery with the missing bolster and the last two are in marked. Yes some need some cleaning up.
Close ups of the Red Devils. Yes, the blade on this first one is perfect. What you see is my fingers reflected off of the mirror (chrome) finish. It has a Brass center rivet and the smaller rivets are steel. Other two have all steel rivets.
Close ups of the Russell's. First one has no bolster and three rivets. Next two have bolsters and only two rivets. The two rivets are at the middle and back of the handle. It seems like the bolster is designed to hold the front of the scales (wooden pieces) to the Tang.
Close up of the Biddle. Blade is 1 1/2" wide so not spec correct but I added it for the manufacturer logo in case someone finds a 1 1/4" Biddle.
Thank you,
Henry

Very nice. Red Devil tools in themselves would be interesting to collect.

Don,
You know my position on catalog figures (to be taken with a grain of salt), but FWIW, here's a scan from the 1944 Heyle & Couch hardware catalog I have.

Hi All,
I finally found a match to my putty knife with the 2 big rivets.
A couple more Post War/NOS. I thought these were too nice to pass up. I just couldn't do it.
Thanks, Dave

Dave,
Excellent finds! What is stamped on the blades of each of the postwar knives that are on the cards?
Thank you,
Henry

Hi Henry
They are marked UNION. Your collection of putty knives is awesome! Looking at Jason's picture on page 4 he has a couple of knives one is marked P3-1-1/4 UNION with a different font, all of the other Red Devil's I have seen are marked P1-1-1/4 to include the two I have on the card's. I wonder when they went to the P3 then back to P1 ??? any clue ?
Thanks
Dave
