That's a pretty sweet machinist chest. Nice pickup. I couldn't resist and old Gerstner chest when I ran across one. They sure don't make them like that anymore.
I really like that level, did that come with the box?

The level and some of the Items in the box were my Grandfather's, the box was empty when I purchased it.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
That crank is a crank for an RL-29 SC reel machine. The big one. Perhaps other stuff, but I know it fits that.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Per Chad, it's for an RL-31. With the two different square openings, you both may be right.
I see wooden machinists chests all the time, but never at a price I am willing to fork over. Guy wanted a buck and a quarter for a Lufkin last weekend, which was a steal. It was unused NOS. Literally the best condition I have ever seen on a wooden machinist box. But I don't want one that bad unless I find a seriously uninformed seller. Gerstners here run way over that up to 300 or more.
I've never seen a fin de siecle box from any mfgr. Truly an extraordinary piece, Andy. The recessed pulls are gorgeous.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
The crank will fit the RL29, and any reel axle of the time. Handcranking an RL 29 would be a pain in the ass since the way it was mounted most of the time, the side you could crank from is in close proximity to a side of a vehicle bed. It is mainly for the RL31
The reason for the 2 holes is that it acts like a poor mans transmission, and the center hole is for when you are paying out wire.

Re: Spring has Sprung Tools
Total skunkage today, but I did see this VIM MFG ignition set. NOS/unused. What's interesting about is that it has a 13-digit NSN (5180-00-422-9584) that tracks to 1963-1974 in my database, and all the wrenches still meet 1945 GMTK specifications! They're all 15* x 60* configuration, all the right sizes. It's neat that it's in such great shape and complete, but I have no real interest in that era.
