I haven't had a chance to post my finds the last few weekends and had almost decided to let this thread go but I had to post one more find from this morning. The Bristol race is just up the road from one of my favorite flea markets and historically race weekend means few vendors. I even debated whether it was worth going or not.....but I'm glad I did. As I was walking down the isles a vendor who usually has a few axes had this one on his table. As soon as I picked it up he says "you know what that is don't you? It's military". So of course at that moment I expected him to ask an outrageous amount. I about fell over when he told me what he wanted for it. Dismayed at how little he wanted I immediately pulled out my wallet, paid without haggling and walked away feeling a little guilty. Its an awesome axe with original handle and its solid as the day it was made. Seems like I say it every weekend but its one of my favorite finds.

Nice, and useful. Sharpen and repaint and you are done. In the event you really have too many of them - is that even possible - you can rank them by condition and trade the rest to other collectors.

I see few good examples here in the UK, and none of them are cheap. If I see one at the right price locally I'll buy it, even though I don't need another.

What at fine example of an authentic axe Phil. You early birds do find some wonderful kit which must make those early starts worthwhile. I was lucky enough to be gifted an original True Temper/U S A axe back in 1974 by a military vehicle collector who is no longer with us. Some UK people may remember Cyril Groombridge who was a true pioneer in the field. Amongst my "favourite finds" (actually bought for about £5 via an auction site) have to be a grey QMC tyre pump (£1), a Stuart tank marked #2 D shovel and two stencilled MVMTS boxes. I hate to think what all the other tools add up to!

Great looking Axe, Phil, and a fantastic find! I'm fairly green with envy.
That will look great hanging off your GPW.

Indeed. funny you should mention Cyril and a Stuart in the same message, as he had a Stuart and a Weapons Carrier that was so quiet you couldn't hear it run. Also a rough Dodge WC 6x6 with the UK registration plate GPW 123.

Gordon, that is my quandary, to go with a restored shovel and axe on my jeep or go with original non-restored ones. Unfortunately my jeep has been restored. Don't get me wrong it looks great but I'd rather it be an unrestored jeep with original paint.

Cliff, those are some awesome finds. I have found at this point about every piece of the onboard jeep tool kit or the GMTK but the one piece I would most like to find in the wild is a GMTK box with original stenciling like you, Greg and others have found. Every time I head to the flea that is on the top of my list. I have found many GMTK tool boxes but none with original FSN stenciled on it though I have found a couple with some stenciling on them.

I don't know Cyril Groombridge but his name sounds like he is a professor at Hogwarts.

Roger, Sounds like a good day. If you get a chance post some photos.

Mud, If I remember correctly you already have one these axe heads and put a handle on it but if not let me know.

Nice Axe Doc! I've spent the last week in Asheville. Passed through Knoxville today and tonight in Spring City. Unfortunately, back to OK tomorrow and will likely miss the Eclipse.

Saw but didn't buy a 5 gallon bucket of "War Emergency Anti Freeze" DuPont brand over the weekend. Didn't even have a camera.

And my first "real" USMC "mystery can" though this one was "USMC" marked. It had been taken to with a Plasma cutter and made into a jack-o-lantern. Guy says "I can't sell them if I don't cut them up". I told him I'd been looking for one for years but not one that was ruined.

Another guy had turned a $250 1/2 gallon jar into a $50 lamp. He cut the bottom off. He sold it...so no doubt another jar must die!

I've found 2 of the True Temper heads so far. One was on a more recent haft, so I removed it. Waiting to find another brush axe to re-hang that head (and others).
The axe head that I re-hung was a Woodings Verona with original paint on the head.
Link to that thread is HERE with the True Temper making an appearance at the top of the thread.

I was very busy while in Asheville working with my wife. I should have told you before we left, but there was not time for the flea. :(

We did catch the eclipse from Crossville. Ended up making it to Camden after the eclipse but the Interstate was a madhouse and we overnighted with Dad.

I still hit multiple flea markets every weekend though a recent injury has kept me away the last few weeks. Even though I've been going for years it still amazes me what shows up there. There is nothing better than digging through old tools and even better if they are Dad's or Grandad's old tools. Your pliers are a nice find but keep in mind that pliers with the screwdriver tip are not correct for the jeep on board tool kit or the GMTK. Also, do you know how to measure the correct length of a file?

Thats correct. It's also called the Heel. A few years ago many of us had to go back and replace our files because we had included the length of the tang.
