Thanks Guys. I suspected they were prewar and even hoped they might be early war but they were just too cool not to use.

I'd consider them early wartime. We don't have any catalogs after the 41 and no reason to suspect they suddenly dropped that branding.

Finally, I was able to complete my Duro 1/4" set after obtaining a very uncommon durolite spinner. I'm not really sure of the reason they are so rare as Walden, New Britain and others are relatively easy to find and in very good condition. The rest of the Duro set is very well made, solid and of durable material. The Duro driver in the ignition sets is known to have suffered from poor quality and for lack of a better description " spontaneously combust". The Duro spinner may have shared a similar fate. The dilemma has always been which brand set to use for my keeper. Fortunately with Chad's photos which include more than one set it makes that decision much easier.

I have a bit of an affinity for these 1/4" drive sets. Needless to say, but I'm green with envy over your Durolite spinner. And the box looks cherry.
Definitely a keeper that belongs in your GMTK.

I've been trying to go as Duro as possible for my kit as I tweak all the pieces. So far in Duro, I've got the long pattern DBEs, 2 of 3 of the short DBEs, the DOEs, a pair of water pump pliers, Ignition roll, 1/2" drive ratchet and sockets, and the 1/4" drive set... minus the nut spinner  . I don't know what else they made for the war effort, but if it's out there, I'm trying to find it. :P

While we are thanking Don I'd like to thank him for helping me find the rare Barcalo 1/2 x 9/16" DBE wrench that completes my set.

Phil,
It was my pleasure to pass that one along for your excellent set. Those of us Barcalo fans on this side of the pond have been looking for those for a long time to try to catch up with our friends in the U.K.

Here is a recent change I made to my set and wanted to share. After the higher resolution pictures recently posted by Roger and some prompting from Jason I decided to give up my Walden DLB set and replace it with a set of New Britain DLBs.

Phil,

Very nice! Just out of curiousity, what is the width of the NS91 compared to Jason's in this viewtopic.php?f=48&t=282717&hilit=new+b ... g#p1641151 post?

Bill, mine measures approximately 37/64". It does not appear to have been altered. I would point out though that the sizes of the DLBs weren't specified until 1945.

I just recently found an NS91, too. Looks like the same 9/16"-37/64" as yours. Thanks for checking.

I think I know what you mean by this statement, Phil, but I might say it a little differently...None of the MVMTS/GMTS SNL's included the sizes of the bits until the January 1945 ORD 6 SNL G-27. That's true. But that doesn't mean the sizes for the DLB's (which were Federal Stock Number tools) weren't specified until 1945. Remember that the QMC and the Ordnance Dept did not specify tools. Tools were specified, by Federal Stock Number, in the Federal Standard Stock Catalog, Section IV. When the QMC and then the Ordnance Dept decided what they wanted in a tool-set, they picked out the tools from the Federal Standard Stock Catalog. When the Ordnance Dept wrote the SNL's they transcribed the specifications from the Federal Standard Stock Catalog specifications, including or excluding what they wanted. Some of the nomenclature descriptions were quite sparse and became more detailed throughout the war. We see this with other tools as the manuals progressed. Drag link bits were not included in the 1939 Fed Specs I have a copy of, so I can't confirm their sizes. I do believe the sizes would've been included in the same way we see sizes in the Fed Specs for other tools. Whether the 41-B-647 was 47/64" or not we don't know for sure. Unless it was a different size, and then changed, I believe it's highly likely that the 47/64" blade width included in the January 1945 ORD 6 SNL G-27 was the blade width that had always been specified for the 41-B-647 in the Federal Standard Stock Catalog.

Guys,
In case you missed this elsewhere, New Britain was making an NS-91 drag link bit with a blade width of 9/16" in 1940. Also an NS-92 at 15/16" and an NS-93 at 1-3/16". Sometime between 1940 and 1948, and with no doubt in my mind in direct response to Federal Standard Stock Catalog specifications for 41-W-647, they started making an NS-91 drag link bit with a blade width of 47/64" instead. Mudbox has one.
