4 gallon air compressor

Postby Robin » Thu Jul 29, 2010 9:00 pm

I have this frame for the 4 gallon air compressor, but I don't have a clue as to what the engine is supposed to be. Is there a manual that covers this compressor? So far, all I've been able to find on the internet are bad pictures that don't help.

Robin,
I have one of those air compressors. It is complete. I will take a look at it tomorrow and I will let you know what the engine is for sure. I think it is a Briggs and Straton.

It appears in a manual that I have here but no specific mention of the engine manufacturer.

Robin, I have a PDF copy of the manual Derek shows, I can email it to you if your email will allow an 11 meg file.

35. DESCRIPTION.
a. This compressor is designed especially to inflate tires, and to
operate a pneumatic-type grease gun. It is mounted in a carrier assembly
with a single wheel to make the unit easily portable. The 4-cubicfoot,
air-cooled compressor is belt-driven by a 11/2-horsepower gasoline
engine. The governor-controlled air pressure supplied by the unit is
maintained between 105 pounds minimum and 130 pounds maximum.
The tubular frame of the unit serves as the air storage reservoir. The
unit is complete with hoses and fittings for tire inflation and lubrication.

Wondered why there were drain valves on the frame!

Robin,

I think I have a wartime Air Compressor pub that covers this. I checked a wartime Engineer TB on Air Compressors but it wasn't an Engineer piece so it wasn't in there... If I have an applicable reference I'll post my findings here.

That compressor (and a few accessories) compose the Second Echelon Tool Set No. 3. The accessories are a Chuck-Gage (8-C-5300), Cleaner, engine (40-C-1008-20), Gun lubricating (40-G-498-25) and Hose, air (33-H-120). Looks like a handy little set up.

Downloaded and saved......Flywheel will be off tonite. Did a leak down test earlier and looks like it will be a runner as soon as
I get spark. Strangely enough most parts are still avl. and in stock at a friends shop here in town. His is a 2nd generation
Marine & mower shop that never threw out the old inventory thankfully.
