M201 ignition timing setting

Postby robkuijpers » Thu May 05, 2005 1:29 pm

Hi,

I have a very early M201, actually being a MB built France in 1951. The bottom pulley of the engine has a timing marker. On the timing chain house there are two timing markers "T" and "A". I have tuned the ignition timing to the "T" (using a timing light"). When accellerating the engine speed the timing marker moves neatly towards the "A". My question: have I set the iginition correct?

Best regards
Rob

Sounds right, "T" must be Top Dead Centre or TDC on no. 1 cylinder, and "A" for advance.

If it works, and doesn't make more than occasional pop-popping noises (which is normal), then leave it at that.

If not, you will have to hunt down the timing marks on the flywheel.

Hi Rob

Best way to tune a engine is by the ear or with a vacuumgauge.
Its very easy. Tuning with a timinglight doesnt work right, because
we have very high rated octane gasoline nowadays.

By the way I live in Rucphen not far from you

Corne,

How would you set the timing using the vaccum gauge ?
Adjust for highest vacuum ?
