Evinrude or Johnson? :)

As for the pedals,I would say that there is more to say about them that what has been said... :)

The pedals don't look identical, and they seem to be in backwards/switched?

You lost me at "Evinrude og Johnson". :P

The pedals have been switched, the raised up edge goes next to the steering column. The smooth surface one is is actually the Clutch Pedal and is knownas the "stamped pad" which is correct for approx June 41(mmmmmh) CHANGE TO JUNE 44. to end of war. The diamond tread is a Brake Pedal and is post war civilian thru 50's-60'sCivilian and M-38/M-38A1.

That's 50% of the mystery solved - thanks! I guess that pedal isn't correct for a Hotchkiss either?

Ben,
The diamond pattern shaped could also be WOF,
The stamped smooth one, as far as I know, is Willys only, and late war, can't remember exactly, but late 44 to end of war production.

I think Luca was refering to the rubber hand priming pump for the fuel, that's a modern boat thing.

The mid-44 thru end of war was painted with a grit containing paint. W.O.F.? that's a good thought.

Yes, but before being smooth stamped steel covered with the grip texture, weren't they all cast?

Seff, while it is patent that the pedals on your jeep are mismatched and also switched around, I would not trust any "expert" telling you that the "stamped pad" is correct for approx June 41 to end of war.

The stamped steel pedals came much later than 1941, allegedly because there were other priorities that made it impossible to keep casting them. A paint coat with a special paint took care of the anti slip requirement.

As for the Evinrude vs Johnson question,it was a joking way to point out that outboard motor fuel priming pump. There is no difference between Evinrude and Johnson, as both used the same, being part of OMC. Of course an outboard motor part sticks out as a sore thumb,in a jeep engine bay! :)

Gotcha. I guess my lack of knowledge shows. :)

I was not given an explanation as to why the original fuel pump was circumvented.

How about June 44 thru end of production on the stamped pedals?

Yes, that is way better than that 1941 date mentioned before!

There is an excellent book by Pat Ware, "M201, the story of the Hotchkiss M201 and the French Jeep" the first and second editions were published during 2001 and 2002.It has some nice photos and production data. that will help broaden your Jeeknowledge.
Welcome to the World War Two Jeep experience, you have a good start with this nice Jeep.

Thank you! :D

To elaborate: I like having a jeep I can work on and drive without ruining its value.

It is just a matter of deciding what you want to do with your jeep, and sticking to it. If reenacting is your main goal, the actual vintage of your jeep is not that important, and its external aspect matters more than what can be seen opening the hood or crawling under the vehicle.

Replace the steering wheel with an american made metal spoked bone, delete that incongruous hood number in black, replacing it with a plausible one in White, getb rid of that White star on the jerrycan, and you are good to go!

Remember to keep aside, safely stored, any french part that you might now decide to replace with an American made one:One day you might decide to reconvert your jeep to original Hotchkiss specifucations, and you would regret having trashed them.
