Spare tire lock

Post by cewardjets » Fri Apr 06, 2007 7:15 pm

I just bought a lock for my spare tire. I'm curious what is the proper way to secure the chain to the spare tire mount. I have a 3 stud carrier. Can anyone give a little insight for the proper or the way the orginals were installed?

I'm curious what is the proper way to secure the chain to the spare tire mount.
This is my tire lock and I always believed that the open end of the loop expanded in to one of the wheel stud holes to hold the chain.

Tom.....

Through 2 x 3/8" holes, 11/16" apart drilled on the center line at 90 degrees to the two mounting holes.

Derek...

The ring is attached to the mount, not the wheel..

I dont understand!

The question is, where to secure the spare tire lock chain on the two stud spare wheel carrier. Could somebody post a pic?

Thanks!

Hi Gusti & Tom,

I'm not sure, but were they still issued with the MB/GPW when changed to the two stud spare wheel carrier?? Which was introduced around late 1943.There are no holes in
an original two stud bracket to utilize the fixing of the chain. You could do a 'field mod' and drill a hole for a bolt through the chain etc.

Hi Peter!

On my two stud spare wheel carrier the right stud is longer than the left stud. I thougt, this longer stud might be needed for the lock? So why make a longer stud, if the lock with chain is only a field mod?

I did not have the time yet, to search literature for pics with two stud spare wheel carrier AND lock. That´s why I was asking for a pic.

The red one had the two holes also but many years ago I welded them up before I knew they were supposed to be there.

Hi all,
The picture that Sean has posted with the 2 holes I think is for a GPW. According to John Farley's book number 2, he has a section on differances between Ford and Willys parts. It shows the plate like Sean's and states that it is a Ford one. Also theres a picture April 45 of a GPW crossing a pontoon bridge with a plate that has 2 holes in it, also according to another topic a while back the plate is the wrong way round, also no Lock.

Dave

Sean, Dave and Joel:
Thank you, that makes things clear concerning the way where to fix the lock chain.

Question:
Does that mean, that late MB´s were not factory equipped with spare tire LOCKS? Or does it only mean, that late MB´s were not factory equipped with the spare tire LOCK CHAINS?
