R. Lee Ermey passes at 74
"Semper Fi" Marine!
I had the pleasure to meet R. Lee at the Knob Creek Gun Shoot about 10 years ago. It's been a rough weekend for the hobby. At least Mac will have someone to go jeeping with.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news. I had the pleasure of meeting him once. He was a true friend of the MV hobby, Conservatism and of the NRA. He will be truely missed. RIP Marine.

Very sad, met Gunny at Ft. Benning in 2010 he was there shooting a segment for his show Mail Call. Genuine in every way and went out of his way to talk to troops.
God's Speed Gunny.

Re: R. Lee Ermey passes at 74
You had to go through boot camp to fully understand.
There were a lot of actors that tried to play the part of a drill sergeant.
No body did it better.
And I am not sure it was all an act. But if it was, Outstanding !!
Never met him personally, but know people that have, and they all had great things to say about him.
Rest In Peace, Sir.

Semper Fi, Gunny....
The best story I know of is how he got the role in "Full Metal Jacket"....look it up, it's worth mentioning that while brought on board as a consultant or something, his presentation of that opening monologue at boot camp was so inspiring that the director hired him on the spot for that role and the actor previously selected to be the Drill Instructor was given the role of door gunner on a Huey....the one who shot at anything that moved including men, women and children...and water buffalos. The guy yelling "Git Some" while he fired his M60.
We met The Gunny at the Alameda MVPA Convention and he was a pretty accommodating guy for photos and autographs and everything.
But I sure would want to be on my Ps and Qs if I was in his boot camp command!
Rip... R. Lee Ermey

Did two Mail Call and Guns productions with him...RIP. Great guy, a gentleman. You would never believe after meeting him he could do the opening scene in FMJ....quiet, soft spoken, immaculate three-creased shirt and campaign hat! Left too young!

I met him at the Little Rock, AR, convention in 07. A real gentleman. I have a pic of me with him. One of my favorite. He is missed. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Re: R. Lee Ermey passes at 74
I took my two young lads to meet him there in '07. One was 8 the other 6. He was signing pics of him in a Jeep or on a WLA with an annotation of To/From. My boys were wearing grey shirts with "ARMY" on the front. They knew R. Lee was USMC and when he asked the youngest for his name for the autograph, he said, "Mark, that's M....A....R...K... (real slowly for him to spell). R. Lee looked up at me with a smirk and gleam in his eye almost as if he thought I had put the young man up to a "help the Marine learn to spell gig" It is a story we recount often after meeting him.Mike Wright wrote: ↑Tue Apr 17, 2018 4:46 amI met him at the Little Rock, AR, convention in 07. He was gracious, spoke kindly with my sons and a real inspiration to meet.
I know when he passed, Gunny Peter opened up the gates smartly for him, and saluted, with cover of course.

Re: R. Lee Ermey passes at 74
Was privileged and lucky enough to do several episodes on Mail Call and Lock & Load with him before becoming a series regular on Gunneytime. We had an exceptional repore with each other and we got to the point that when we worked together we never went with a script, Cole the director would just let us go to it with each other, ribbing, joking and winding each other up over the course of the segment. He was a true legend, a wonderful man and a good friend. I for one will miss him dreadfully.
