original fuel pump rebuild

Post by Danmb45 » Sat Mar 24, 2018 5:34 pm

Hi all. I'm looking for a rebuild kit for the fuel pump for my 45 MB. Any pointers on finding a kit?

I got my rebuild kit from Army Jeep Parts after I got a crappy on from a different vendor (Not RFJP). I was very happy with it, there were items other kits didn't have.

Unless you plan on running non-ethanol gas as a steady diet for this jeep, don't buy an NOS kit.

I would not use NOS rubber related products anywhere especially here or brakes or mounts.
Listed products are 'new' good with all fuels.
Not suggesting you buy from here but their listings will help establish interchangeability, including the common 6 cylinder Chevrolet.
Many fuel pump kits are interchangeable, except for the diaphragm return spring.
That spring is what establishes delivery pressure.
They are colour coded, usually.

For most fuel pump "rebuilds" you need only replace the diaphragm after a thorough cleaning. If you find a RED spring in yours, you are good to go. As artificer has mentioned, they come in different color-coded versions according to the fuel pressure delivery required by the carburetor. You will find them in red, yellow, blue and black. Some kits....have some very poor valves and the valve "hold-downs" have been known to fail. If the valves do not show any visible damage, I would use them again along with the hold-down.

You did not state if this pump was actually working when you began the rebuild or not...if it was, then I would only change the diaphragm and use all the other parts (plus new gasket) and go with it.

Haven't started rebuild yet. Going with kit from Army Jeep Parts as soon as the website starts working again.

Due to the fact that some kits have inferior valves & hold downs that break, I agree with Chuck to only change the diaphragm. Most of our jeeps will only wear the diaphragm due to age or or ethanol fuel.
