Oil leaks on tube between block and filter

Post by Wocha » Fri Mar 23, 2018 3:19 am

Hi all. When someone told me that jeeps like to mark their territories I smiled. Boy were they right  I've had fuel leaks, water leaks, diff leaks and now I have an engine oil leak. I cannot eliminate a leak on both ends of the tube that runs between the top of the oil filter and the connection to the block below the fuel pump. I've read somewhere that this engine did not have a filter originally and that this was a common problem with war time engines and the 'field modification' was to block the tube at the engine block. In fact when I started overhauling the engine mine was blocked. I've replaced the tube and all the connectors but I still get a steady drip when the engine is running. Is it ok to block the tube again as I'm running out of ideas

The 1/8" pipe thread on the 90 Degree elbow has a way of getting loose from 70 years of use. Install a new WEATHERHEAD 402X2 Male Elbow at the fuel pump end and at the Oil Pressure location beside the Oil Pump and at the bottom of the Oil Filter.
The threads wear and the fitting will be loose due to the restricted position.
Weatherhead was OEM to Jeep.

There is a history of the rubber tube itself leaking. Especially the modern, aftermarket replacements.
The end of the rubber hose is crimped to the end fittings. This is where they usually fail.
Also like Joel said. The brass fittings have problems after years of use.
The brass fittings have an inverted seat that the tube flare seats to. This inverted, flared seat gets worn from multiple tightening until the tube will no longer seal against it, no matter how tight you tighten the line nut. Time for a new brass fitting.

Unfortunately I live in Spain so I don't have access to U.S. stores. I'm more interested in wether its ok to block the tube without causing any damage

You will not cause any engine damage by blocking the oil filter tube.
You also will not have any oil filtration and the oil returning from the filter will not end up on the timing chain ( or gears ). There has been past debates on the long term effects from this.
Might also want to increase oil change intervals since there will not be an oil filter.

The leak is definately coming from the tube or the brass connector. I can watch the drip form on the oil filter end.

This particular leak is very common, sometimes you can screw the elbow in one turn to tighten the elbow, more often than not it will not tighten and a new fitting will be required. I keep a stash of Weatherhead fittings and new hoses to service my Jeeps with.

Does anyone have any long term experience using Ron's hoses? I remember a while back that there were some bad quality hoses that were bad.

Though not super long, I've been using Ron's hoses for two years without issue. No leaks and they seem to be holding up well.

Sometimes I've used that type of copper flare washer.
They are really very effective and easy to use.

If I remember it was a 1/4'' copper conical washer for the oil filter hose.
