Factory weld on driver’s side inner toe board?

Post by Michael O. » Thu Mar 22, 2018 5:41 pm

I can’t remember if this was a hole we were filling in or a factory weld? Since many of the factory welds are “sloppy” I thought that maybe this was original. Does anyone else have this blob weld? It’s on a March ‘43 GPW tub.

Thanks in advance!

Although our GPW bodies were made approximately a year earlier, neither has the weld "blob" in that area.

I believe my GPW tub to be a late 43' and it doesn't have this weld blob.

Maybe it’s an anomaly? It’s not done with a wire welder which was what was being used to weld various holes and such previously, rather looks to have been done with a stick welder. I don’t know what to do with it....I’d hate to erase a factory weld....even if it was a mistake!

My GPW is 102310 with a DOD of 3-3-43. I do NOT have this weld bubble on mine.

This is mine. April 43 build GPW 106837. The picture is a bit blurred but there is no weld, stud or lump. I will try and get a better picture tomorrow.

Can you determine whats on the back side of the weld? If there is no hole that was filled then it is probably a factory anomaly. We've seen various stray welds ,especially on frames, so its likely that most GPW's and MB's will show some differences in assembly welds.

Behind this blob weld is the overlapping firewall panel. I could not feel any filler weld on the back side so it's not filling a hole. I'm inclined to think that is a factory mistake or an attempt to fix a failed spot weld and will probably leave it as it is.

Probably just an accidental strike that stuck and left this little deposit.

Managed to get a decent picture of the area. Nothing there at all.
