steerig box troubles
I replaced the worm gear, sector shaft and bearings as part of the steering rebuild. When I put everything together and try to set the tensioner screw, I have one spot of high resistance about 3/4 thru the turning range. When I turn the screw back so it isn't touching and watch the sector shaft, the sector shaft pulls into the box when it gets to that spot. I am interpreting this to mean the worm gear machining isn't uniform and is at fault.
Appreciate any advice about this.
Thanks

Re: steerig box troubles
I have gone back to the adjustment but I'm confused because that "hard spot" which should represent where the wheels will be in straight ahead position is not in the mid position of the sector shaft travel. I will have about 1.5 wheel revolutions one direction and 2.5 in the opposite direction.

Did you save the old parts? Am guessing the pitman arm is not installed exactly as it should be. Is your old sector shaft marked with a line on the end and are the indexing marks on the nut side of the arm visible?

Re: steerig box troubles
I saved all the old parts but I did not mark the pitman arm orientation to the sector shaft before disassembly. Right now the pitman arm is off and the box is in the vice as I'm rebuilding it. I had to replace the worm gear due to damage on the shaft and the pitman arm ball is out of round so I am likely going to replace it as well. I have tried the old sector shaft and the new one and get the same result: the "rough spot" is not in the middle of the sector shaft travel.

I'll have to look for indexing marks on old sector shaft, not sure right now.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, copying the marks from the old parts is one way. I pre mark the new parts. Original Made-in-USA replacements were not always marked.

Re: steerig box troubles
Very useful information, and right on time for me since I am rebuilding the steering on mine in a few days.
Particularly helpful information on adjustments for center.
Will be picking up a NOS front axle (military surplus from the USMC) this evening, so will have new tie rods, and king pins. Rebuilding the bell crank, and drag link this weekend, and will start on the Ross box after that.
