GPW dipsticks and tubes

Post by wynnski » Thu Feb 22, 2018 12:01 pm

When did the oil dipstick style change over, from the loop type to the flange type, on the GPW engine?

If you are asking about GPW 106837 era motors....they probably are the PCV type and as such have a rubber hose connecting the oil filler tube to the air cleaner crossover tube....and they have sealed systems requiring a twist-type dipstick.

Hello Chuck
Thank you for the reply. Do you know at what engine number they changed? The reason I ask is because I have just managed to get hold of an early engine with no step at the serial number and I want to build it up with the correct parts for the 106837 engine, so If I do ever find 106837 or one near the number I can just change everything over and not have to buy twice.

Adrian...

Then you will need the parts required for a PCV system on your engine....You need an oil filler tube with the indent on the side for the genny, the tube for the rubber hose to the air cleaner crossover tube and a dipstick with a "ridged" side cap and "ears" on the top. All that occurred between October 1942 and February 1943. BEFORE your jeep was produced.

Hello Chuck
Thank you for the reply. I am glad it is the later engine as the dipstick tubes for the early engines are about 4 times more expensive.
